2020 Fashion Picks: The Trends You Need To Know About This Year

What’s a better way to kick off a brand new year than getting familiar with the hottest fashion trends? The new year is coming in hot with some of the most unique trends we’ve ever seen. From retro vibes to unavoidable political wear, here are the trends you need to know about this year…and the trends you don’t want to miss!

The 70s was the era of bell-bottom jeans, platform shoes, jumpsuits, rompers, big hoops, and color blocks. Now, you’ll see these pieces making their way back into the fashion scene en masse! These pieces that were trendy a few decades ago are making a comeback in a big way. If you’ve been waiting to break out your old favorite disco outfit, 2020 is the year to do it. You’ll feel totally groovy when you rock those platform wedges! Even though trends repeat themselves, they usually show back up with a new twist. You’ll likely see jumpers in colors like millennial pink and avocado green mixed in with the bright jeweled hues of yesteryear.

Muted Tones

Along with toned-down versions of all your favorite colors, expect to see new color players at the forefront in 2020. Colors like mauve, lavender and aqua are the unexpected hottest colors of the new year. Muted tones fall somewhere in between childlike pastels (like baby blue and pink) and bright saturated colors (like magenta and lime green), which makes them perfect to pair with any outfit. Expect to also see them worn in unexpected ways. Aqua shorts, anyone?

Going Green(er)

There’s been a push in recent years to go green and look out for the planet with things like recyclable packaging and silicone straws. Not only is it totally necessary and a great practice to get into, but it’s (finally) becoming trendy in the fashion world. With plogging (picking up litter while jogging) challenges reaching a peak in 2019 and celebs like Jane Fonda eschewing the practice of buying brand-new clothes, expect to see more of these trends in the fashion industry. Look out for recycled materials, clothes made out of sustainable plants, and even a huge increase in buying used clothing.

Outdoor Wear

The outdoors has always been trendy in its own way, but with more people thinking about sustainability and learning to enjoy the earth again, outdoor wear has seen a recent trend boost. Brands are taking cues from popular outdoor companies and making durable clothes like jackets, vests, pants, and shoes for many different types of weather. Expect to see these outfits and accessories more and more in everyday fashion.

Signature Prints

We know that true leopards will always be neutral in our hearts (and outfits), but other signature prints are trendier than ever right now. Everything from accessories to jackets and even shoes are featured in design brands’ signature trends. If this seems familiar, you’re right on the money! This trend was popular in the eighties and again in the early naughts! Much like the seventies throwbacks that we’re seeing in the fashion world right now, designer signature prints are forecast to be a popular trend in the coming months of 2020.

Fringe

With songs like “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X and “The Git Up” by Blanco Brown topping the charts in 2019, cowboy style is not just for Sam Elliot anymore. No, siree, we can all get down with a little cowboy style in 2020, and adding fringe to even the most basic outfits is the best way to do it! Fringe purses, vests, and even boots are all over the place and you can expect this trend to grow as the year goes on. There are so many different styles of fringe that you’re going to be able to choose from including classic Western-wear fringe, Native American-inspired pom-pom edging, and breezy lace fringe!

Political Fashion

You can’t get away from it. With 2020 being an election year (and forecast to be a big one at that), you’re going to see political trends in fashion. From haute couture to smaller boutique styles, you can find the political trends in fashion that go right along with all your views. Just be prepared to get all the ooh’s (and maybe some boos) when you step out in one of these trendy outfits.

Let’s Belt It

Don’t say you didn’t know. Belt has gone beyond a mere buckle that secures the waist to a major article of fashion everyone is opting for these days to add interest to their looks. Having made several appearances during the Fall 2020 Fashion Week means this trend is coming back in full force and is definitely going to blow up like wildfire in the coming months. As spotted on the runways, blazers, pantsuits, and dresses aren’t complete without throwing on a belt.

Everything Neutral

The days of millennial pink seem to be finally over and neutrals are taking up the coveted space. This isn’t hearsay or allege but rather, neutrals were practical on the streets of fashion week and you can barely scroll down the ‘gram feed these days without a slay queen having you feeling super inspired in everything neutral. In this case, we think it’s the perfect time to dust it off.

Since we’ve entered into this new year and an entirely new millennium, the possibilities are endless in fashion. The trends are always changing so be sure to keep your eyes out for these awesome looks and so much more!
