Sequin Styles: How to Shine In This Trendy Attire Like A Pro

Sequins can feel intimidating to some, but fear not! These pieces of shimmering beauty are versatile and can adapt to almost any situation. Long story short:  they aren’t just for fancy dinners and parties! Sequins are the trend for 2020 and can be incorporated into any part of your wardrobe. With these tips on how to wear sequins, you’ll be sure to shine, no matter what!

1. Balance is Key

Remember, when you’re rocking sequins, balance is key. So if you’re wanting to wear any sequined piece, consider balancing this eye-catching material with more neutral tones and accessories. For example, if you’re rocking a high-waisted skirt made entirely of sequins, pair the skirt with a neutral sweater to give your flashy look a calmer, comfy vibe. Or if you’ve decided on a solid, bright sequin dress, try a leather motocross jacket to add an edgy, casual feel to your outfit.

The general key to making sequins work in your day-to-day wear —  not just for parties or on the red carpet — is to wear one sequin piece per outfit. If you wear a sequin dress with a similarly sparkly jacket, it could be a little more dramatic than you’re looking for. Of course, the one rule of fashion is that there are no rules! If you want to take your sequin game to the next level, you can absolutely make two or more items work. The key here is that they don’t touch.

Try donning a sparkly top and pairing it with a matching set of sequin strappy heels with a pair of black skinny jeans in between, or try balancing your beaded jacket with some classy boots covered in crystals. As long as you have a more neutral piece separating your main sequin statement pieces, you’ll look as confident as you feel.

2. Keep the Accessories to a Minimum

Similar to wearing (usually!) only one piece of sequin clothing per outfit, keep in mind your sequin dress, skirt, top, or jacket is doing the work of accessories for you. A sequined top, dress, or skirt makes the statement (and should be the main focal point of your outfit), so when it comes to accessories, keep them to a minimum.

Try to avoid large, flashy jewelry, like big necklaces or large dangly earrings. Instead, opt for smaller styles like understated studs paired with a delicate bracelet. Similarly, keep your shoes and handbags neutral colors or unobtrusive patterns. This balance will help keep the focus of your look where it belongs — on your shining sequins!

Unless your shoes are part of your multi-piece sequin outfit, keep them neutral too. If your sequins are glittering gold or silver, try pairing that with a black pair of heels or pumps. Or, if your sequins are a neutral shade like white, you can make your shoes a little more daring, like a pair of bright red stilettos.

3. Keep Your Makeup Palette Neutral

Following the theme of keeping your sequins the focus of your outfit, to keep your look chic, tone down your makeup palette as well. Opt for neutral eye colors and light lipsticks, or keep it understated with a simple lip gloss and mascara pairing.

If you’re following the bright-but-separate guideline discussed above, opt for sequins on your lower half, like a shoe and handbag pairing or a skirt, and work the style into your makeup with a bright red lip color or dramatic sparkling eyeshadow.

4. Break the Rules

We already talked about how there are no real rules in fashion, so if you want to rock a head-to-toe sequin ensemble, then girl, go get it! Try using classic combinations like solid black and white monochrome to give your sequin look a modern, modest twist. If you love your full-length sequin gown, carry your beaded purse to match.

However you wear sequins, it should make you look the way you want to feel. Want to feel sassy and bold? Throw on as many sequins as you want. Want to feel a little classier? Pair that blouse with your sequin pencil skirt. Want to feel ready to party? That midi sequin dress is waiting for you.
