I Switched from Lip Gloss to Lip Balm, and I’m Not Looking Back
For years, lip gloss was my favourite part of my makeup application.
I loved the shine and the finishing touch it gave even the simplest look. A little gloss could make a bare face feel more put together, and I rarely questioned its place in my makeup bag.
Then I started reacting to some of the products I used.
I would find a gloss I liked, wear it for a while, and eventually notice that my lips were reacting again. I couldn’t always tell what was causing the problem, and I knew other women who used the same products without any issues.
It wasn’t necessarily that the products were bad; these products simply weren’t working for me. Still, finding an alternative became frustrating, especially because I wasn’t ready to give up the glossy finish I loved.
My eventual introduction to lip balm came through a recommendation, and I haven’t looked back since.
What began as a practical switch has become a genuine preference.
Discovering that I could have shine, moisture, and, in some formulas, sun protection in one product made the transition much easier than I expected.
Lip Balm Has Become More Than a Lip Care Essential
The beauty of switching to lip balm is that I didn’t feel as though I was giving up much.
Lip products have become increasingly difficult to categorise by appearance alone.
Some balms deliver the glossy finish traditionally associated with lip gloss, while others come with sheer colour, richer textures, or ingredients designed to help protect the lips from moisture loss.
The distinction between beauty products, particularly makeup and lip care, has become less rigid, and that suits the way I like to approach beauty.
The modern lip balm is a good example of this overlap.
A lip product can be simple and keep lips comfortable, but it can also contribute to the finished look of your makeup.

On days when I don’t feel like wearing makeup, that combination is particularly appealing.
Sun protection is another consideration.
Many lip balms now contain SPF, so they can provide moisture while helping protect the lips from ultraviolet exposure.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a lip product with SPF 30 or higher outdoors and reapplying it approximately every two hours, as well as after eating or drinking when needed.
It is a useful reminder that lip care deserves a place in a daytime routine, rather than being reserved for the moments when lips feel dry.
Of course, not every balm offers all these benefits.
Some are designed primarily to create a protective barrier, others focus on a glossy finish, and tinted versions vary in colour payoff.

A product can look glossy and feel comfortable without necessarily offering the same protective benefits as a well-formulated lip balm.
My personal experience has also made me more conscious of how a product feels on my lips, not just how it looks when I apply it. A beautiful finish is of little use if the product leaves my lips uncomfortable afterward.
Fragrances, flavourings and certain other ingredients can irritate some people, which is why the American Academy of Dermatology advises avoiding products that cause burning, stinging or discomfort.
Reactions can have different causes, so I wouldn’t automatically assume that a product is unsuitable for everyone simply because it doesn’t agree with me.

Lip balms can cause reactions too, so switching categories doesn’t guarantee every formula will suit you.
In my case, however, finding a balm that works for me has made my everyday beauty routine feel simpler.
I still appreciate lip gloss, and I understand why it remains a favourite for so many people. But I no longer feel that choosing lip balm means sacrificing the finish I want.
With glossy textures, sheer tints, and SPF options available, I can choose a product that works with my preferences and my lip care needs.
That is ultimately why lip balm has earned its place at the top of my list.
The lip product gives me the kind of finish I enjoy while making comfort and care part of the same routine.
