McQueen Brings Savile Row Precision Back to London Fashion Week

London thrives on contradiction, balancing royal processions with underground raves and tradition with subversion.

This tension defined Alexander McQueen’s Spring/Summer 2027 collection, the house’s first official London Fashion Week show since 2001.

Creative director Seán McGirr presented the collection in the Undercroft of Lincoln’s Inn Chapel, a 15th-century space with stone floors and visible gravestones. The historic setting provided an apt backdrop for a collection that combined precise British tailoring with the energy of South London club culture.

Guests such as Emma Corrin, Alexa Chung, Florence Welch, and Lola Tung observed as McGirr explored what he describes as London’s distinctive “wrongness.”

“London always stimulates me,” he said after the show. “There’s an attitude, there’s a playfulness. People mix things in a ‘wrong’ way. I love the wrongness.”

The resulting collection was both rooted in the house’s rebellious DNA and forward-looking, blending serenity with nocturnal energy.

McQueen’s return was symbolically significant. Founded in London by Lee Alexander McQueen in the early 1990s, the brand became known for theatrical, often provocative shows in the city before shifting its focus to Paris.

Under previous creative director Sarah Burton, the brand occasionally presented in London, but this was its first fully scheduled London Fashion Week appearance in 25 years.

For McGirr, who joined the house in 2023, this return provided an opportunity to deepen his understanding of the brand’s identity and collaborate with key figures from its history.

McGirr drew inspiration from two contrasting sources: Piero della Francesca’s Renaissance painting The Baptism of Christ, which he associated with transcendence and serenity, and the vibrant, free-spirited style of young London ravers.

He also incorporated the sharp metalwork of longtime McQueen collaborator Shaun Leane and the precise craftsmanship of Savile Row tailor Huntsman, which previously partnered with the house in 2002 and 2012.

The collection began with bold suiting.

Structured jackets and trousers featured closed-over shoulders shaped like furled angel wings, transforming classic British tailoring into something otherworldly.

Three looks, created with Huntsman using heritage British wool, referenced the disruptive spirit of 1960s Savile Row tailor Tommy Nutter. These pieces balanced severity and theatricality, bridging tradition with McQueen’s signature drama.

Hair was styled into twin-peaked mohawk horns, referencing the energetic silhouette of The Prodigy’s Keith Flint and reinforcing the rave influence.

Footwear included pumps with scalloped heels referencing the house’s mid-2000s Armor bag. McGirr described these shoes as fitting for Cyberdog, the well-known Camden store specializing in cyber and clubwear.

Evening pieces moved away from red-carpet formality, emphasizing movement and sensuality. High-sheen silk dresses featured sharp cutaways and revealing details.

Paloma Elsesser wore a corseted look that paired structured bodices with sheer skirts designed for dancing. Curve-hugging diaphanous dresses and open-backed corsets rising above the shoulder line added fluidity and edge.

Metallic embellishments by Shaun Leane elevated several looks.

Silver leaves appeared to drift across gowns and tailoring, evoking the romantic image of ravers walking home with foliage clinging to their clothes after a late night out, which McGirr appreciated.

A standout dress featured interlinked, hand-embroidered metal skulls, each unique.

Leather or recycled silver harnesses anchored silky fabrics, while warped and stretched materials created sculptural bodices on lacquered satin. Mesh, perforated leather, and color-piped knitted shorts and skirts further emphasized the rave aesthetic.

Jacquards appeared shadowed and layered, with deliberately disrupted patterns.

Abstract tie-dye effects on tailored jackets and diffuse colour combinations evoked the afterimage of club lights. The palette and textures balanced hard and soft, dark and luminous, resulting in dynamic, vibrant garments.

Designing for Alexander McQueen is among fashion’s most challenging roles. The founder’s legacy invites constant comparison with each new collection.

McGirr has approached the role by studying various periods of the archive each season. With Spring 2027, he moved beyond homage, integrating historical references into a contemporary vision that feels both personal and authentic to the house.

Critics noted the collection’s coherence.

The fusion of Savile Row precision, Renaissance calm, and underground energy resulted in garments with both commercial appeal and conceptual depth.

The show demonstrated McGirr’s growing confidence in balancing beauty and darkness, a hallmark of McQueen. As one observer noted, he appears more angel than demon, yet fully understands that darkness has often inspired the house’s creativity.
