A midi skirt or dress usually falls somewhere between the knee and ankle, although the exact point can vary considerably. That small difference in length can completely change how a garment looks.

A hem that sits just below the knee feels very different from one that stops halfway down the calf, even when the silhouette remains the same.

This flexibility explains much of the midi’s staying power. The length works with a fitted silhouette, a full skirt, a slip dress, or a structured design.
