Céline Dion Revives Her Iconic 1997 Oscars Chanel Gown for Paris Tour Finale

Céline Dion appeared on stage in Paris wearing a custom Chanel gown that honoured one of her most memorable red-carpet looks from nearly three decades ago.

To close the final week of her Paris residency, with additional dates scheduled for May 2027, Dion opened her concert in a shimmering gown inspired by the silver Chanel dress she wore at the 1997 Academy Awards.

Designed by Matthieu Blazy, this modern reinterpretation highlighted both her enduring style and haute couture craftsmanship.

Dion’s return to the stage has been remarkable. After privately managing stiff-person syndrome (SPS), she made a strong comeback last month at the Plenitude Arena in Nanterre, France.

Throughout the residency, she has impressed audiences and fashion observers with high-fashion ensembles from designers such as Dior and Givenchy. The final shows were especially notable as she revisited her own fashion history with Chanel.

The original 1997 Oscars appearance remains a landmark in both her career and red-carpet lore.

On March 24, 1997, at the 69th Academy Awards held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, Dion became the first artist to perform twice in a single Oscars ceremony. She delivered her hit “Because You Loved Me” and a cover of Barbra Streisand’s “I Finally Found Someone.”

For the occasion, she wore a glamorous silver plunging Chanel gown from the spring 1997 couture collection, designed by Karl Lagerfeld.

The look was completed with a striking comet-style necklace, also by Chanel, featuring platinum and diamonds.

Contemporary accounts described the dress as a sparkling beaded halter-style gown with a deep V-neck in tones of silver, pewter, and white—radiant under the awards-show lights.

Nearly 30 years later, the original gown remains timeless.

For her Paris performance, Chanel updated the design with a sweetheart neckline and a more structured silhouette, while maintaining the original’s luminous quality.

The gown featured embroidered muslin over a padded, corseted bustier, raffia detailing at the neckline, and was finished with glass crystal rhinestones, seed beads, and glass beads. Created at Chanel’s 31 Rue Cambon ateliers, the piece included 6,000 jewels and 5,000 beads, requiring over 1,380 hours of skilled work.

A newly recreated High Jewellery necklace complemented the gown, referencing the comet piece Dion wore in 1997.

The updated Comète necklace is made from platinum, 18-karat white gold, and 1,080 diamonds totalling over 67 carats. Inspired by Gabrielle Chanel’s 1932 Bijoux de Diamants collection, the celestial motif echoes the dress’s starry embroidery, resulting in a cohesive ensemble.

This moment highlights Dion’s status as a style icon who evolves while honouring her past.

Referencing her historic red-carpet look on a prominent stage demonstrates her confidence and understanding of the importance of image in her career. From her 1990s breakthrough to her recent high-fashion appearances, Dion has consistently taken creative risks and made bold statements.

The Paris residency has become a celebration of resilience and artistry. Fans have observed her arrive in carefully selected high-fashion looks before each performance.

Concluding this chapter with a custom Chanel piece that required over a thousand hours of atelier work is especially fitting, elevating the performance into a spectacle. As Dion prepares to resume touring in 2027, this Chanel tribute will likely stand out as a defining visual moment of her return.

In an era when celebrity fashion often follows trends, Dion’s decision to revisit and reinvent a nearly 30-year-old signature look is both refreshing and personal. Together, the gown and necklace serve as a living archive of her career, connecting her 1997 Oscars milestone to her return to the stage.

For fashion and music fans, this moment reminds us that true icons wear their history with pride, continually refining and reimagining it for the present.
