Zendaya Wears Web-Inspired Versace Couture in Shanghai

Zendaya’s influence on fashion continues to grow. On July 24, 2026, she attended the Shanghai premiere of Spider-Man: Brand New Day in an archival Atelier Versace gown from the Spring 2016 couture collection. The look exemplified method dressing, using fashion to extend the film’s narrative beyond the screen.
Alongside her co-star and husband Tom Holland, Zendaya wore a Versace gown that balanced ethereal and edgy elements. The dress combined off-white and sheer fabrics with a web-like motif, continuing her method dressing approach.
Draped fabric at the bust and shoulder transitioned into asymmetric angles and panels of white contrasted by sheer, caged material, creating a deconstructed effect. A rope detail on one shoulder and a thigh-high slit reinforced the asymmetric design.
The gown served as a visual extension of the Spider-Man universe without relying on overt costuming.
Personal touches elevated the ensemble. Zendaya accessorized with a Rolex and Chopard jewelry, highlighted by a Chopard spider brooch set with diamonds and a 19-carat yellow sapphire.
This subtle detail referenced the film without being overt. Her beauty look was equally considered, featuring straight hair with micro-bangs and makeup with charcoal smokey eyes and a glossy lip.

This approach, now a significant marketing tool in Hollywood, involves actors dressing to reflect the themes and aesthetics of their films. It creates cultural moments that spark organic conversation beyond traditional advertising.
The Shanghai premiere look exemplified this philosophy. The Versace gown showcased duality, pairing ethereal draping with hard-edged netting.
As one fashion critic noted, “The stark juxtaposition between ethereal draping and hard-edged netting adds a certain storytelling nuance to her method-dressing approach.”

Zendaya’s Versace gown embodied this vision, blending frothy fabric with dark, web-like netting.

She previously wore a sparkling red-and-blue Versace set referencing Spider-Man’s costume, a 1940s vintage dress with a sequined spiderweb, and even styled a vintage Spider-Man t-shirt as a dress. However, the Shanghai look was more subtle and sophisticated, offering a nuanced nod to fans.
The Shanghai premiere was one highlight of a press tour marked by standout fashion moments. In Paris, Zendaya wore a Schiaparelli gown resembling a marble statue, referencing her role as Athena in The Odyssey.
In London, she chose an archival Alexander McQueen for Givenchy look inspired by the myth of the Golden Fleece. In Mexico City, she wore an Ashi Studio gown with web-like knit details and beaded fringe reminiscent of spider silk.
The contrast between Zendaya’s ethereal looks for The Odyssey and the sharp, dark silhouettes for Spider-Man highlights her versatility and her team’s thoughtful approach.

It almost feels as though the dress is in the middle of a transformation, which neatly echoes Peter Parker’s own transformation into Spider-Man.”
Zendaya’s Versace Shanghai premiere look demonstrates that method dressing is more than a trend; it is a new form of storytelling. By extending a film’s narrative through fashion, she forges a deeper connection with audiences and generates excitement beyond traditional marketing.
As Spider-Man: Brand New Day premieres on July 31, anticipation remains high for Zendaya’s next fashion statement. For now, she reaffirms her status as the leading figure in method dressing.
