Headbands have a way of disappearing from the fashion conversation only to return when everyone has started to think of the hair accessory as purely practical. 

That cycle is happening again. The familiar hair accessory is back, but the current version feels less like a school-day staple and more like a styling choice.

The revival makes sense alongside fashion’s renewed interest in pieces from the ’90s and early 2000s. Headbands already have a strong fashion history, from Audrey Hepburn’s love affair with the accessory to the preppy styles associated with Blair Waldorf. The difference now is how freely people are wearing the headbands.

A headband can add colour to a neutral wardrobe, or make a simple jeans-and-T-shirt combination look considered. The accessory can also soften a structured look, bring texture to an otherwise plain outfit, or give a sporty ensemble a more polished finish.

Recent runway collections have helped push the accessory trend back into view, while celebrities and street-style dressers have shown that the headband does not have to come with a complete preppy outfit.

This is probably the most interesting part of its return. You can wear the headband without committing to the entire look that originally made it popular.

So, how are the fashion girls wearing headbands now?

The zigzag headband trend is one of the easiest ways to lean into the revival.

The style’s unmistakable shape immediately recalls the ’90s and early 2000s, but the rest of the outfit can keep the look current.

Try a headband with relaxed jeans, a fitted tank, an oversized blazer, and simple flats. 

The contrast between the casual clothes and nostalgic accessory keeps the look from feeling like a costume.

A structured tortoiseshell, black or cream headband works particularly well with simple clothing. Think button-down shirts, straight-leg jeans or classy skirts, loafers and a structured handbag.

The headband becomes the detail that gives a restrained outfit some personality without requiring another statement piece.

A colourful headband can do the work of an accessory stack. Red is an especially easy option with denim, white, navy, grey or beige.
