After much anticipation, the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards finally graced us with a magnificent fusion of music and fashion. Just like the countless glamorous red carpet moments we’ve come to love, it was a night of some of the season’s boldest and most innovative and experimental fashion looks, as expected. This year’s VMAs held a unique significance as one of the rare major red-carpet gatherings amidst ongoing strikes in Hollywood.
Further intensifying the anticipation, the thrilling live performances by renowned artists like Olivia Rodrigo, Cardi B, and Megan Thee Stallion created an atmosphere primed for an unforgettable evening, one that truly celebrated the sublime artistry of music—essentially, the very heart and soul of the event.
Stepping onto the red carpet, Doja Cat effortlessly turned it into her personal runway with a gown by Oscar De La Renta, inspired by cobwebs as a nod to her upcoming album, Scarlet, which prominently features two spiders on its cover. In her signature boundary-pushing style, the “Paint the Town Red” rapper wore nothing but a tan-colored G-string under the dress, leaving little to the imagination as she posed gracefully for photographs.
Not to be outdone, other celebrities also embraced the trend of sheer fashion, including Tinashe, Emily Ratajkowski, Tiffany Haddish, Megan Thee Stallion, Karol G, and Nicki Minaj. Bold embellishments were another highlight, with Saweetie dazzling in an Area gown adorned with two large bones, while Bebe Rexha flaunted a black leather ensemble featuring strategic cutouts on her posterior and even a horse’s tail.
Guiding everyone through the spectacular evening was the delightful Nicki Minaj, who played the role of the event’s host. The ceremony took place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, yet again, and it commenced at 8 p.m. ET, airing exclusively on MTV.
