Meghan Markle attended an international engagement in Geneva, Switzerland, demonstrating her commitment to purposeful advocacy.
On May 17, 2026, the Duchess of Sussex delivered a speech at the inauguration of The Lost Screen Memorial at Place des Nations, highlighting the urgent issue of online harms affecting children. Her monochromatic black attire underscored the seriousness of the occasion and her ongoing advocacy.
The event, co-hosted by Archewell Philanthropies and held before the 79th World Health Assembly, emphasised digital safety as a public health concern. By partnering with the World Health Organisation and Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Meghan supported calls for improved protections for young technology users.
The Lost Screen Memorial displays illuminated light boxes with lock screen images of children who lost their lives due to online violence, including cyberbullying, sextortion, and harmful content. Previously shown in New York City, the installation highlights the personal impact behind the statistics.
In her speech, Meghan addressed the audience with emotion and clarity:
Behind me stands The Lost Screen Memorial. Not statistics. Not avatars. Not data points. Children. Each name belonged to a child who was loved beyond measure. A child whose laughter once filled a kitchen. Whose shoes once waited by a front door. Whose future once felt limitless.”
She continued by encouraging the audience to consider critical questions:
How many more millions of children will be harmed by products that, while innovative, are still designed without sufficient safeguards? When will children be able to enjoy the extraordinary potential of technology without it compromising their wellbeing?
Meghan criticised “relentless algorithms, exploitative engagement, and endless exposure to harmful content,” while emphasising that safer outcomes are possible. She encouraged parents to model healthy digital habits and called on lawmakers to strengthen protections, framing online child safety as a design and policy priority.
For the occasion, the Duchess wore a tailored black suit jacket and trousers over a black cami. Her hair was styled in a bun, and she wore gold jewellery, including a necklace, bracelets, a watch, and dark stone earrings. She completed the look with black suede pumps.

The night before her Geneva appearance, Meghan posted a photo on Instagram with her four-year-old daughter Lilibet as they prepared together, offering insight into how she balances motherhood with her humanitarian work.
Meghan’s solo trip to Geneva highlights her commitment to digital safety and mental health initiatives through Archewell. This engagement builds on her previous international advocacy. By working with the WHO during the World Health Assembly, the event raises online child protection to a major global health priority.
The memorial and speech also highlight the work of The Parents’ Network, a group of bereaved families advocating for change, as well as efforts toward tech accountability and policy reform. As concerns about social media’s impact on youth mental health grow, Meghan’s involvement helps connect public attention with grassroots advocacy.
