In a landmark moment for the Miss America Organization and for representation on the national stage, Regan Hutsell of Texas was crowned Miss America 2027 on September 6, 2026.

The 25-year-old Houston native accepted the title at the Palm Beach County Convention Center in West Palm Beach, Florida, becoming the 99th woman to hold the crown. Hutsell’s win is especially significant as she is the first Miss America crowned with her natural hair and the first woman of color to do so in this style.

Crowned by outgoing titleholder Cassie Donegan of New York, Hutsell assumed a role that symbolizes achievement, scholarship, and public service. Her victory marks Texas’s fourth Miss America win and ends a long gap for the state at the national level.

During the pageant, Hutsell performed a jazz dance routine to “Le Jazz Hot,” earning a preliminary talent award. Early in her pageant journey, she considered straightening her hair but ultimately chose to wear it curly and natural. She described this decision as both personal and purposeful.

“I think it’s important now to be able to show little girls who might be watching at home that they can exist as themselves with their own natural hair, with their own natural beauty, whatever that means to them,” she has said. The choice redefined beauty standards for her and, she hopes, for young viewers.

Wearing her natural hair while being crowned made the moment both historic and affirming. Hutsell sees her role as a bridge, representing women of colour, those who wear natural hair, and the broader diversity of American beauty.

Hutsell’s success in the Miss America system has provided significant educational support. She has earned nearly $90,000 in scholarships, including the $50,000 tuition scholarship awarded with the national title.

She is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences with the goal of becoming a physical therapist, aligning her studies with her lifelong commitment to movement and wellness.

As she begins her year of service, Hutsell has outlined her vision for her reign. She hopes to leave a legacy of hope, emphasizing that hope carries people through difficult times.

She wants those who follow her journey to feel inspired to pursue ambitious goals, understand that challenges do not define outcomes, and believe that brighter days follow difficult times.

The 2027 pageant took place over several days of preliminary and final competition in West Palm Beach, marking the first time the event was held in South Florida in this format, with Billy Gilman and Jen Hale hosting.

Final placements included Shelby Bordelon of Louisiana as first runner-up, Kate Dimmett of Illinois as second runner-up, Sharlize True Trujillo of California as third, and Evelyn Smith of the District of Columbia as fourth. The remaining Top 11 contestants represented Hawaii, Iowa, Mississippi, New York, South Carolina, and Utah.

Hutsell’s win comes at a time when discussions about authenticity, representation, and evolving beauty standards are shaping cultural institutions.
