How Margot Robbie Has Been Transforming Herself Into Real-Life Barbie

Movie costumes have always played a significant role in shaping fashion trends and inspiring celebrity styles. From the silver screen to the red carpet, the influence of movie costumes on celebrity fashion is undeniable. Halle Bailey’s “Little Mermaid” outfits, which were inspired by the ocean, and Jenna Ortega’s “Wednesday” looks, are two excellent examples.

This is, however, a case in point for the 2023 comedy and drama film: Barbie, where the Australian actress, Margot Robbie, plays a real-life Barbie. Following the premiere of the movie in Los Angeles on July 9, set to be released on July 21, 2023, Robbie has been showcasing her true Barbie nature, sartorially, and making the Barbiecore trend even more desirable.

In fact, on different occasions during the movie’s promotional tour, Robbie continued to push the limits with themed dressing, with precedence particularly given to Barbie-inspired wardrobe. Slip-on mules, miniskirts, and a lot of pink ensembles are all part of the actress’ cosplay as a real-life Barbie doll.

She is usually seen dressed in looks that pay homage to particular versions, as stylist Andrew Mukamal draws inspiration from 1950s vintage Barbie dolls. He has collaborated with major fashion houses to create Margot’s Barbie-inspired dream wardrobe, which ranges from vintage Chanel tweed to custom Bottega Veneta pink co-ords. Robbie’s press tour began in Sydney, and some major themes have already emerged.

Ahead, are all the Barbie references Margot Robbie has replicated so far in her recent red carpet looks.

Margot Robbie opted to dress in a Vivienne Westwood Couture gown for the European Barbie premiere in London, which was inspired by the “Enchanted Evening” doll from 1990. The corseted dress was made of blush pink satin with white tulle embroidery and had a draped side train. It was accessorized with ivory opera gloves, a pearl choker, and a rose brooch.

For the movie’s LA premiere, Robbie and Mukamal took their cue from 1960’s Solo in the Spotlight Barbie. The actress walked the pink carpet in a sequined Schiaparelli Haute Couture bustier dress trimmed with multiple layers of tulle, embellished with a hand-painted embroidered rose, and accessorized with a pale pink scarf. About 380 carats of Lorraine Schwartz diamonds and a pair of Manolo Blahnik mules completed the ensemble.

At a photocall in Mexico City, Robbie was transformed into 1992’s Totally Hair Barbie thanks to crimped extensions, a vibrantly printed Pucci minidress, Chanel logo earrings, and hot pink Manolo Blahnik pumps.

The photocall in Los Angeles on June 25 marked stylist Andrew Mukamal’s successful debut. He wore a Valentino mini dress on Margot Robbie that had a crisscross neckline and pink and white polka dots, evoking a Pink & Fabulous Barbie from 2015. A pink and white polka-dot outfit was another thing this Barbie wore. Even the bag that Robbie carried matched the color of her doll.

The Original Barbie (1959)

Margot Robbie would not have survived this press tour if she hadn’t dressed as the Original Barbie from 1959. In Sydney, she carried it out. Robbie sported a black-and-white-stripped bandage dress by Herve Leger along with the ideal pair of white cat-eye sunglasses to channel Barbie’s black-and-white-striped bathing suit.

With Day to Night Barbie from 1985, Margot Robbie appeared on the scene in South Korea prepared to display two looks in one. She displayed Barbie’s first appearance while dressed in her daytime attire, which included a hot pink Versace skirt suit, pink and white hat, and pink handbag. And, with her rhinestone phone, she really took us back to the 1980s!

Margot Robbie donned yet another Versace outfit for the nighttime scenes of Day to Night Barbie. This ensemble featured a tulle-skirted confection with a shimmery beaded bodice. Both her shoes and bag were the same shade of pink.

Margot’s second appearance for the London celebrations was similar to the first: a brunette Bubble Cut Barbie who was boxed up with both a red bodysuit and heels and the Enchanted Evening outfit for the 50th-anniversary edition, as Mukamal posted on his stories. Mukamal created his own version of the look by ordering a hot Dilara Findikoglu mini to be worn with Maison Ernest heels.
