Cardi B ignited a firestorm on social media after flaunting an extravagant collection of luxury Chanel items totalling over $52,000, then jokingly claiming she has “no money.”
The Grammy-winning rapper’s latest TikTok video, shared on Monday, has drawn sharp criticism from fans who are struggling with everyday expenses, highlighting the growing divide between celebrity lifestyles and the realities many face.
In the video, the 33-year-old artist showcased her latest high-end purchases, giving viewers a glimpse into her world of exclusive fashion. She started with a coveted Chanel 25 mini lambskin handbag with gold-tone hardware priced at $8,400. Cardi described it as one of the hardest bags to acquire from the iconic French fashion house. “I got so lucky getting her,” she said, adding she avoids wearing it often to keep it pristine.

Fans quickly flooded the comments with frustration. One wrote, “Cardi please girl not now I am struggling to pay my bills girl.” Others echoed similar sentiments: “Sis, this not for us,” “Send me your old things you don’t need,” and “Girl, you wanna send me 15k for student loans?” A pointed response asked, “If Cardi is broke then what am I?”
The backlash highlights a common tension in celebrity culture: the visibility of lavish spending amid economic pressures for everyday people. While many admire Cardi’s success story—from her rise in the Bronx to global stardom, moments like this can feel tone-deaf.
This isn’t the first time Cardi has addressed her finances publicly. Earlier in 2026, she completed her Little Miss Drama tour, playing 35 shows and selling 453,000 tickets, grossing $70 million. The rapper clarified that the tour generated that full amount and revealed she invested $35 million of her own money to make it happen.

Her transparency about the high costs of touring, production, and personal obligations paints a more nuanced picture than the “broke” joke suggested. Yet the optics of a $52K+ handbag haul remain jarring for many.
Cardi B has long been known for her unapologetic embrace of luxury fashion. From her early hits like “Bodak Yellow” to chart-topping collaborations, she’s turned her love for designer pieces into part of her brand. Chanel, in particular, represents the pinnacle of exclusivity, with limited drops and high demand driving resale values sky-high.
However, in an era of inflation, rising living costs, and economic uncertainty, such displays can amplify feelings of inequality. Social media instantly amplifies these reactions, turning personal shopping sprees into public debates. Cardi’s fans, who have supported her through thick and thin, often feel a personal connection, making the contrast between her reality and theirs sting more.
This incident adds to a long line of celebrity controversies involving displays of wealth: think private jets, mega-mansions, and exclusive vacations. While some view it as aspirational content, others see it as disconnected. Cardi has historically clapped back at critics, defending her right to enjoy the fruits of her labour after years of hustle.
