On March 15, 2026, at the 98th Academy Awards, Michael B. Jordan received his first Oscar, winning Best Actor for his dual role as twin brothers Smoke and Stack in Ryan Coogler’s horror-drama Sinners.
This achievement marks a significant milestone in Jordan’s career and makes him the sixth Black man to win Best Actor, joining Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, and Will Smith.
Jordan’s win surprised many during an awards season where Sinners stood out both critically and commercially. Directed by longtime collaborator Ryan Coogler, the film combined horror with themes of identity, brotherhood, and resilience.
Jordan’s portrayal of the twins Smoke and Stack demonstrated his range and received widespread acclaim for its emotional depth. Sinners led the nominations with 16 across multiple categories.

Jordan began by thanking his parents for their sacrifices and acknowledged the Sinners team, including co-stars Wunmi Mosaku, Delroy Lindo, Hailee Steinfeld, and director Ryan Coogler, who had won Best Original Screenplay earlier that evening. “I’m so honored to call you a collaborator and a friend,” Jordan said to Coogler.
The most poignant part of the speech came when Jordan honored the trailblazers in Black cinema: “I stand here because of the people who came before me—Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, Will Smith. To be amongst those giants, amongst those greats, amongst my ancestors, amongst my gods… thank you.”

I know you guys want me to do well, and I want to do that because you guys bet on me. So thank you for betting on me, and I’m gonna keep stepping up, and I’m gonna keep being the best version of myself I can be.”
Jordan’s speech received widespread acclaim from fans and critics, who described it as “perfect,” “emotional,” and “powerful.” Social media highlighted his recognition of personal support and the broader legacy of Black excellence in film.

The 2026 Oscars, hosted by Conan O’Brien, highlighted cinema’s ability to inspire and unite. Jordan’s win and gracious speech underscored the importance of perseverance, community, and representation. As he promised to “keep stepping up,” anticipation grows for his future projects.
With this achievement, Michael B. Jordan not only adds an Oscar to his accomplishments but also inspires a new generation to pursue their dreams and honor those who paved the way.
