Lauryn Hill was named the inaugural recipient of the Living Legend Icon Award at the 2026 BET Awards, in recognition of her significant contributions to Black excellence and musical legacy.

On June 28 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, Hill received a tribute that highlighted her lasting impact on hip-hop, R&B, and multiple generations of artists. This recognition emphasized her groundbreaking career and the ongoing importance of authenticity and community in music.

The Living Legend Icon Award, sponsored by Sprite, was created to honor artists who have mastered their craft while staying deeply connected to their cultural roots.

According to BET, it celebrates pioneers “whose body of work has remained essential not because the culture held on to them, but because they never stopped holding on to it.” Lauryn Hill perfectly embodies this spirit. Connie Orlando, EVP of Specials, Music Programming & Music Strategy for BET, described Hill as “the very definition of a living legend,” noting that across every era, she has shaped moments rather than chasing them.

Hill first gained recognition as a member of The Fugees, known for hits such as “Killing Me Softly” and “Ready or Not.” She later released her acclaimed solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, in 1998.

The album combined R&B, hip-hop, and introspective lyrics, earning critical acclaim and multiple Grammy Awards. It is widely regarded as a benchmark for artistic integrity and emotional depth, often appearing on “best albums of all time” lists.

The event included a tribute performance featuring artists such as Lizzo, Rapsody, Doja Cat, Common, Queen Latifah, Nas, SZA, Doechii, and War and Treaty. Hill’s children Selah, Joshua “YG” Marley, and Zion, also joined the stage, adding a personal element to the celebration.

Ice Cube introduced Hill and spoke to her influence. During the event, Hill noticed that “Ex-Factor” was not included in the performances, so she took the stage to perform it herself. “I wasn’t supposed to perform, but I heard nobody was doing this one,” she said, engaging the audience with her vocals.

In her acceptance speech, Hill shared her motivation: “I do this because I love y’all. You know? I do this because I want you to have everything that I experienced.”

Hill credited her “wonderful parents who loved on me, poured into me and protected me.” She explained that this foundation inspired her to use music to share love and support with others. She emphasized her commitment to supporting her community, her children, and herself, and highlighted the importance of uplifting others through art and communication.

During the ceremony, Hill’s son John, celebrating his 23rd birthday, joined her onstage. Hill addressed her six children—Zion (28), Selah (27), Joshua (24), John (23), Sara (18), and Micah (14)—and shared that they inspired The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. “When I made The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, I was inspired by you,” she said. “I was inspired by the beauty. I was inspired by our potential.”r potential.”

Hill encouraged individuality and diversity, urging the audience to embrace their unique talents, whether in fashion, hair, supporting others, or performing. “We don’t have to sound the same. We don’t have to look the same.

We don’t have to be the same,” she said. She called for mutual respect and support within the community: “Let’s celebrate each other. Let’s honor each other… If nobody else loves us, let’s love on each other.” She concluded, “It’s intimidating sometimes we shine so great.”

Hill’s recognition at the 2026 BET Awards comes amid a show that also honored Teyana Taylor with the Icon of the Year award and Sylvia Rhone with the Ultimate Icon Award. The night highlighted rising stars like Cardi B (with the most nominations) alongside veterans, showcasing the full spectrum of Black musical excellence.

This award affirms Hill’s influence beyond music, as her work continues to impact artists across genres, from neo-soul to modern hip-hop. Her performances at previous BET Awards, including a 2024 appearance with YG Marley and Wyclef Jean, demonstrate her ongoing connection to the stage and new generations.

As the event concluded on June 28, 2026, Lauryn Hill’s ongoing influence was evident. Her legacy demonstrates that true legends shape culture and inspire future generations.
