Zendaya once more showed why she is one of the most captivating fashion figures in Hollywood by giving a memorable performance on the red carpet at the Los Angeles premiere of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, combining high-drama couture with a quiet kind of superhero symbolism.

The actress, who has won an Emmy, arrived on Monday night in a bold black satin dress that drew in every camera flash and thus secured her position as the undisputed style star of the film’s international press tour.

The gown was designed by Ashi Studio and had a sculpted corseted bodice with a deep neckline that led into an architectural, ruffled skirt.

Its shape, which skimmed the thighs, accentuated Zendaya’s long legs before settling into a wide, structured train that moved in a dramatic and intentional manner.

The overall impression was that it was both futuristic and organic — rather than resembling a literal spiderweb, it was more about the concept of transformation.

Her long-time stylist, Law Roach, explained the idea to Variety as usual with great precision: “It’s a sort of abstract way of showing the spider. You see, in our view it’s like this woman transforming into something.”

The jewellery, supplied by Boucheron, gave a refined sparkle via diamond drop earrings that reflected the light each time the dress was turned.

The actress finished off the look by slicking her hair back into sculptural curls that framed her forehead and by wearing pointed black heels, thus achieving a sophisticated and otherworldly appearance.

The press tour has so far given rise to a number of memorable fashion choices, this ensemble representing another such chapter. When in London, Zendaya donned an archival spiderweb dress taken from John Galliano’s 1997 ‘Circus’ collection.

In Paris she surprised her fans by combining a vintage Spider-Man T-shirt — which Roach had bought on eBay for only $34.99 — with some heels, a choice that reflected the stylist’s view that “style doesn’t always have to cost a fortune”.

Although Roach has not named a single favourite look from the tour, there has been a consistent approach involving intelligent storytelling through clothing rather than simply relying on spectacle.

Next to her was Tom Holland, her co-star and husband, who took a more modest yet still appropriate route. He wore a deep burgundy suit with a bright red shirt and a navy tie, thus displaying a traditional leading man’s elegance without overshadowing Zendaya’s architectural drama.

The two first met when filming Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2016, admitted their relationship several years later, and have since become one of the most closely watched couples in Hollywood.

The way their red-carpet styles matched at the premiere showed both the chemistry they have in their professional relationship and the ease they have in their personal lives.

It was also a complete reunion of the Marvel family. Director Destin Daniel Cretton came in to take group photographs, with the cast including returning and new members such as Jacob Batalon (as Ned Leeds), Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Liza Colón-Zayas, Tramell Tillman, and others.

The star power was further enhanced by the presence of Jaden and Trey Smith, making the event a celebration of the franchise’s continuing cultural impact.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day picks up the story of Peter Parker following the events of No Way Home, in which a spell performed by Doctor Strange caused the young hero to disappear from the memories of all the people he loves.

The film, which is set for release in cinemas on July 31, deals with Parker having to cope with a world that no longer knows him.

Although Marvel has kept the details of the plot very closely hidden, the title refers to a well-known comic-book storyline concerning reinvention and new beginnings – themes which matched the transformative nature of Zendaya’s first look.

The reason Zendaya has such a consistently magnetic presence on red carpets is that there is intention behind each of her choices.

By working with Law Roach, she sees fashion as an extension of a story rather than just as decoration; whether she is echoing a real web pattern, opting for accessible vintage clothing, or showing off an abstract “metamorphosis”, each of her appearances seems linked to both the larger world of the character she is playing and to the actress she is continuously becoming.

The gown from Ashi Studio at the Los Angeles premiere captured that approach in a single powerful image: a woman in the process of becoming something new, elegant, and unforgettable.

Now that Spider-Man: Brand New Day is about to go on show, Zendaya has once again shown that her involvement goes far beyond what is seen on screen. When she is on the red carpet, she doesn’t just wear the clothes; instead, she brings a concept to life, encourages people to interpret it, and leaves the audience discussing it for a long time after the flashes have stopped.

In an industry filled with red-carpet appearances, such a thoughtful kind of spectacle is still rare. Zendaya and Roach are continually raising the standard, with each carefully thought-out look.
