Beyoncé Shares an Insight Jay Z’s Eight-Year Loc Journey and the Emotional Process

Beyoncé recently offered insight into her husband’s eight-year loc journey and the emotional process of combing them out, emphasising their daughter Blue Ivy‘s influence. This story celebrates natural Black hair and highlights the importance of family in embracing authenticity.
Jay-Z, previously known for his tapered Caesar cuts, adopted free-form locs as a signature style for years. Ahead of his 2026 Roots Picnic performance, he chose to comb out his locs.
This decision reflected not only a change in appearance but also Jay-Z’s commitment to his family and to honouring his late father, Adnis Reeves, who wore an afro.
According to Beyoncé in the Cécred YouTube video, the journey began when Blue Ivy was about five years old and expressed insecurities about her curls. To support her, Jay-Z grew his hair into locs to demonstrate the beauty of natural textures.
“We really wanted her to love every inch of her gorgeous curls,” Beyoncé shared, reflecting on how the family aimed to build Blue’s confidence.

Now a confident teenager, Blue Ivy participated in the comb-out process with her parents and professional stylists.
Jay-Z debuted his afro on stage, honouring his late father, Adnis Reeves, who favoured the style and was a Philadelphia 76ers fan. Performing at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia connected his personal legacy with a cultural celebration.
Beyoncé’s haircare brand, Cécred, was central to the process, which took six days and involved hairstylist Nakia Collins, Beyoncé, and Blue Ivy. They worked section by section, starting at the ends of each loc and using Cécred’s Detangling Spray for manageability.
The team also used Moisturising Deep Conditioner, Moisture Sealing Lotion, and Cécred’s Hair and Scalp Balm to break down buildup and preserve hair length and fullness.
After the locs were removed, Beyoncé completed the final detangling, deep conditioning, blow-drying, and trimmed Jay-Z’s ends, further emphasising the family’s involvement in the transformation.
This attention to detail has contributed to Cécred’s positive reputation in the natural hair community. Jay-Z is described as the brand’s “most loyal customer,” and the video highlights both the products and the significance of natural hair journeys.
Jay-Z’s transition from locs to an afro is part of a broader trend. Celebrities such as Beyoncé have consistently promoted natural textures through music, performances, and her haircare line. In a society that has often pressured Black individuals to straighten their hair, stories like this help normalise and celebrate natural styles.
This transformation aligns with broader cultural conversations, including the resurgence of afros in fashion and greater visibility of textured hair in mainstream media. Jay-Z’s choice reinforces that natural hair is versatile, beautiful, and worthy of celebration at any age. His appearances at NBA Finals games and World Cup events demonstrate how seamlessly the new look fits his public image.

As Beyoncé concluded in the video, Jay-Z remains “forever the blueprint.” His willingness to evolve publicly encourages fans to embrace their authentic selves without fear.
