Osas Ighodaro’s AMVCA 2026 Gown was Created with 400 Metal Sponges

In recent years, the AMVCA red carpet has consistently featured standout collaborations between designer Veekee James and Osas Ighodaro. Their partnership has become a highlight of Nigerian fashion, with each season surpassing the last. At the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, they set a new standard for red carpet excellence.
Osas Ighodaro, an award-winning actress and frequent red-carpet presence, attended the 2026 AMVCA in two striking ensembles. The first was a silver ballgown crafted from 400 repurposed metal sponges, an innovative and unconventional choice.
The second was a crimson sculptural gown with architectural elements reminiscent of gallery installations. These looks reinforced the creative synergy between Osas Ighodaro and Veekee James.
Both ensembles were photographed by Felix Crown, with makeup by Damola Adeniji, and every detail was meticulously executed.
The silver ballgown showcased remarkable construction. Its bodice featured a silver, heavily embellished corset with sheer sections, crystal and bead detailing, and sculpted three-dimensional forms at the bust. A choker-style chain necklace completed the neckline.
The dramatic contrast between the structured bodice and the voluminous skirt was striking. The skirt, made of pale silver-grey tulle, was covered with circular disc-shaped appliqués, creating a layered, textured effect. These appliqués were 400 repurposed metal sponges, shaped and sewn onto the gown, resulting in a highly original design for the AMVCA.
Repurposed metal sponges, typically used for cleaning, were elevated to high fashion in this design. The skirt appeared textural and reflective, resembling an art installation. A long train allowed the sponge-covered surface to capture light from multiple angles.

Felix Crown photographed the look in both a studio setting and against a textured wall with dramatic lighting, highlighting the gown’s dynamic interplay of light and shadow.
The use of 400 repurposed metal sponges was a deliberate statement on sustainability and the potential for transformation in fashion. At a time when the industry faces scrutiny over environmental impact, Veekee James demonstrated that couture can incorporate unconventional, repurposed materials. This choice also challenged traditional notions of luxury, proving that high fashion need not rely solely on conventional fabrics.

Veekee James created a floor-length gown from horizontal red fabric bands layered over a sheer nude base, each edged with red crystal trim for added texture.
The narrow column silhouette accentuated Osas’s frame, while a dramatic, oversized collar rose above the shoulders, framing the neck and face. This feature transformed the gown into a wearable sculpture.

Felix Crown photographed the gown against a deep red digital backdrop with concentric circles and a heartbeat waveform, reinforcing the “Pulse” theme. The interplay of crimson fabric, crystal trim, and the architectural collar created a look that was both timeless and contemporary.
Damola Adeniji’s makeup emphasized a flawless, radiant complexion, complemented by minimal lashes and a neutral lip, allowing the gown to remain the focal point. Osas’s blonde hair was styled sleekly to avoid competing with the dramatic collar, and accessories were minimal. This approach shifted attention from the celebrity to the garment itself, positioning the dress as the centerpiece.

Both looks departed from traditional red carpet conventions, reflecting Osas and Veekee’s willingness to challenge expectations.
Veekee James has established herself as a designer who understands Osas Ighodaro’s strengths, while Osas consistently proves to be an ideal collaborator for creative risk-taking. The 2026 AMVCA marked a high point in their partnership. The silver metal sponge ball gown-= and the crimson sculptural gown stand out as innovative and architecturally daring contributions to the Nigerian red carpet.
Together, they exemplify a creative partnership that advances artistic expression in the fashion industry.
