The Best Foundation isn’t Always the Most Expensive

Many beauty enthusiasts face a wide range of foundation choices and prices, often questioning if a $50 product is truly superior to a $15 one. The answer is often no.
Celebrity makeup artist Katie Mellinger states, “As long as the shades suits your skin tone and you like the performance, it doesn’t matter if it’s a prestige foundation or a drugstore brand.
A lot of strides have been made in the last 10 to 15 years to improve the quality of performance with drugstore brands. There’s definitely no shame in saving money when you can get the same effect as a prestige brand”.
Selecting a foundation that suits your skin type and concerns is more important than the price.
An expensive foundation will not perform well if it is the wrong finish for your skin, while an affordable option can look exceptional when chosen and applied correctly. Understanding your skin’s needs and key ingredients is essential.
Know Your Skin Type
The first step in choosing a foundation is understanding your skin. Dry skin requires hydration. “As we get older, our skin craves hydration, not heavy, drying formulas,” says makeup artist Laura Geller in Glamour.
Choose foundations with hyaluronic acid, squalane, glycerin, peptides, and ceramides. Celebrity makeup artist Erica Taylor notes these ingredients “support a healthy moisture barrier” and help “glide on smoothly.”
Avoid matte and powder formulas, which can highlight dryness. Armando Kole recommends “a foundation with more of a ‘buildable coverage’ rather than a full coverage” for dry skin, as full-coverage products “can create a very thick appearance.”
For oily skin, focus on oil control without over-drying. Choose oil-free, non-comedogenic formulas with a matte or natural-matte finish.

Niacinamide helps regulate sebum, while hyaluronic acid hydrates without adding oil. Avoid heavy creams and pore-clogging ingredients such as mineral oil or lanolin.
Combination skin needs balanced care. “The ideal foundation for combination skin possesses specific characteristics that address both oiliness and dryness without exacerbating either condition,” according to L’Oréal Paris Australia.
Liquid foundations with a natural-to-satin finish are ideal for combination skin, as they provide balanced coverage without making oily areas appear shinier or dry areas look flaky. Formulas enriched with niacinamide are especially beneficial because they help regulate excess oil in the T-zone while supporting the skin barrier in drier areas.
If your skin is also sensitive, look for fragrance-free foundations without essential oils. As skin expert Dr. Sam Bunting advises, “It is worth seeking out scent-free formulations.”
Look for calming ingredients like cica and niacinamide, along with lightweight hydrators like glycerin. The UK has strict cosmetic guidelines, so formulas from reputable brands are generally safe, but always patch-test new products.
