This Black-Owned Brand is Revolutionising Afro Pic Comb

For years, innovation in the textured hair space has largely focused on products. New curl creams, scalp oils, edge controls, and treatments arrive on the market every season promising healthier hair and easier styling.

The tools, however, have remained largely unchanged. The afro pick, one of the most recognizable symbols in Black hair culture, has looked almost the same for decades.

That is what makes Textura Hair interesting. Founded in 2024 by Gen Z entrepreneurs and USC graduates Ayonnah Tinsley and Michael Steele, the Black-owned brand is approaching textured hair care from a different angle. Rather than creating another formula to add to an already crowded market, the founders chose to rethink the tool itself.

The result is the HydroPick, a patent-pending afro pick that combines hydration and styling in a single design. At first glance, the tool resembles a modern version of the traditional pick.

A closer look reveals a system that allows water or oil to be dispensed directly onto the hair and scalp while combing, reducing the need to constantly switch between products and tools during a styling session.

The launch also arrives at an interesting moment for the natural hair community. Over the past year, conversations have increasingly shifted away from chasing complicated routines and toward healthier hair practices, scalp care, moisture retention, and simplifying wash-day regimens.

As more people embrace natural textures and low-manipulation hair care, products that make hydration easier have become particularly relevant. In many ways, the HydroPick feels aligned with that wider movement.

The Afro Pick Gets a Modern Upgrade

Few hair tools carry the same cultural significance as the afro pick. Beyond styling, the pick has long been associated with identity, self-expression, and the celebration of natural hair. Yet despite its iconic status, the basic design has remained largely untouched for generations.

Textura Hair’s HydroPick builds on that familiar foundation while introducing a practical new function. The tool allows users to distribute water or oil directly to the hair and scalp through a removable cartridge system housed within the comb. Instead of applying product separately and then reaching for a second tool, hydration and styling happen simultaneously.

The design consists of three primary components: the cartridge, the shell, and interchangeable charms. The cartridge holds the chosen liquid, the shell forms the comb structure itself, and the accessories allow users to personalise the hair tool.

Together, this tool creates what the founders describe as a three-in-one experience: hydrate, pick, and accessorise.

The HydroPick is also said to be designed with versatility in mind. Natural hair wearers can use it on afros, curls, and coils, while some users have found additional uses for beard care and grooming.

Available in both metal and plastic versions, the tool combines functionality with customisation, offering a range of colours, shapes, and accessory options.

What makes the concept particularly compelling is that it addresses a challenge many people with textured hair understand well. Moisture is often applied where it is easiest to reach rather than where it is needed most.

By delivering hydration directly during the styling process, the HydroPick attempts to streamline a step that has traditionally required multiple products and repeated handling.

Built by a New Generation of Black Innovators

The story behind Textura Hair is just as compelling as the HydroPick itself. Founded by Ayonnah Tinsley and Michael Steele while still completing their studies at the University of Southern California, the brand began as a final-year project before evolving into a growing business.

Rather than viewing textured hair care through the lens of existing products, the founders approached the industry as problem-solvers, asking a simple question: why hasn’t one of the most frequently used hair tools evolved alongside the needs of modern consumers?

That mindset sits at the heart of the Textura Hair HydroPick. The founders have repeatedly emphasised that innovation in Black haircare should be led by the people who understand textured hair firsthand.

For decades, many of the industry’s most recognisable products were developed without significant Black ownership or representation in the design process. Textura Hair is attempting to change that narrative.

According to the company, the mission extends beyond selling hair tools. The founders also want to increase visibility around engineering, product design, and 3D printing, fields where Black professionals remain underrepresented.

Through product development, community feedback, and education, the team hopes to demonstrate that innovation can happen at every stage of the beauty industry, not just within product formulations.

This vision resonated with early supporters. During its Kickstarter campaign, which ran from May 16 to June 30, 2025, Textura Hair raised $6,434 from 67 backers. The campaign positioned the HydroPick not simply as a hair accessory but as an example of community-led product development, emphasising low-waste manufacturing, customisation, and solutions designed specifically for textured-hair consumers.

For a first-generation product entering a crowded beauty market, the campaign demonstrated that there was genuine interest in rethinking everyday hair tools.

Community feedback has also played a role in shaping the product’s evolution. The removable cartridges, interchangeable charms, and accessory options reflect a design process that continues to develop through user input.

According to the founders, the cartridge alone has gone through numerous iterations as the team refines functionality and usability.

More Than a Hair Tool

One of the most interesting aspects of the Textura Hair HydroPick is its use of 3D printing technology. While 3D printing is increasingly common across manufacturing industries, it remains relatively uncommon within everyday hair tools.

The technology allows for rapid prototyping, product adjustments, and the creation of different colourways and accessories without requiring entirely new production systems.

The HydroPick’s design reflects a broader shift toward personalisation in beauty tools. The system consists of interchangeable components, including removable cartridges and decorative attachments, allowing users to adapt the tool to their preferences.

While customisation is not unique to the beauty industry, it remains relatively uncommon within textured-hair tools, where functionality has traditionally taken precedence over modular design.

The HydroPick has also evolved through user feedback. Early versions relied heavily on 3D-printed components, and some testers reported concerns about plastic not picking out curly hair and long-term durability.

In response, Textura Hair introduced updated versions featuring metal tines and recyclable blow-molded pods. Combined with both metal and plastic options, the Textura Hair HydroPick now offers different experiences depending on individual preferences.

Feedback from early users suggests that the HydroPick’s strongest appeal lies in convenience. Reviews from individuals with thick, coily, and 4C textures frequently highlight the ability to apply oils directly to the scalp without reaching for separate droppers or applicators.

Some users on Instagram also report using the tool while wearing braids, noting that targeted application makes scalp maintenance easier between wash days. Others have experimented with beard grooming, though the product was originally developed for textured hair.

The HydroPick May Be Just the Beginning

Perhaps the most significant thing about the Textura Hair HydroPick is what it represents. The product is not positioned as a one-off invention. According to the founders, the HydroPick is the first step in a broader effort to rethink the tools used throughout textured hair care.

That ambition arrives at a time when the natural hair community is increasingly focused on efficiency, hair health, and long-term maintenance rather than complicated routines. Consumers are asking more questions about product performance, scalp health, and ease of use. Tools that simplify those processes naturally attract attention.

The Textura Hair HydroPick taps into that shift by addressing a familiar challenge through a different lens. Instead of creating another cream, oil, or treatment, Textura Hair reimagined the tool responsible for distributing those products in the first place. That distinction may ultimately be what sets the brand apart.

Whether the HydroPick becomes a future staple remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that Textura Hair has introduced a fresh perspective to a category that has seen very little change for decades. For a company founded by two young entrepreneurs, that alone is an achievement worth paying attention to.

Like many early-stage inventions, the HydroPick is not without limitations. Some reviewers have noted that the dispensing pods can occasionally release more liquid than intended, while others mention that the internal components require regular cleaning to prevent product buildup.

These observations are common in first-generation products and help explain why the brand continues to refine the design. The willingness to publicly address feedback and update subsequent versions may ultimately become as important to the product’s success as the original concept itself.
