Few moments in high fashion capture drama and cultural impact like a standout runway appearance.
At Balenciaga’s Haute Couture show, supermodel Anok Yai opened and closed the presentation in striking red feathered cape and white drapes, captivating the audience. Her commanding presence and the theatrical designs made this one of the most memorable highlights of the 2026 couture season.
Anok Yai’s performance was more than modeling; it was a demonstration of confidence, beauty, and the vitality of fashion.
Anok Yai, the South Sudanese-Australian supermodel, continues to break barriers in the fashion industry. Renowned for her transformative runway presence, she brought exceptional energy to Balenciaga’s show.
Opening in a red feathered cape with a chic top and taupe trousers, she set a tone of power and sophistication. She later closed the show in another dramatic look, bookending the collection with impact. These moments showcased both Balenciaga’s creative vision and Anok’s ability to elevate any garment.
Anok Yai opened the Balenciaga Haute Couture show in a dramatic red feathered cape that balanced spectacle with refinement. The voluminous feathers added movement and visual interest, while the structured silhouette provided modern tailoring.
Paired with a sleek top and taupe trousers, the ensemble combined theatricality with wearability, reflecting the essence of contemporary couture.
This opening was significant for several reasons. It demonstrated Anok’s versatility in presenting both avant-garde and structured designs. The bold red color conveyed confidence and power, themes present throughout the collection.
Fashion critics praised the look for its execution and Anok’s commanding runway presence.
If opening the show was a statement of power, closing it as the couture bride signified legacy. True to her reputation, Anok returned to close the show in another dramatic creation. Her appearance as Piccioli’s first couture bride for Balenciaga was a highlight of fashion theatre.
Bridal gowns represent the pinnacle of a couture collection, showcasing the house’s craftsmanship and the designer’s vision. By selecting Yai for this role, Piccioli assigned her significant symbolic importance.
Anok closed the event in a flowing white dress with an open back. Her ability to bookend the show with powerful yet distinct presentations demonstrated both her range and the collection’s cohesion.
Closing a couture show is among the highest honors in fashion, reserved for models who can carry the entire presentation. Anok Yai’s selection for both opening and closing roles highlighted her status as one of the industry’s leading talents in 2026.
This was not Anok Yai’s first collaboration with fashion designer Piccioli. She previously worked with him for her 2026 Met Gala appearance. As she descended the iconic steps, she did not simply wear a gown; she became a living statue, embodying the “Fashion Is Art” theme.
Collaborating with Pierpaolo Piccioli for his Balenciaga Haute Couture show, the South Sudanese-American model created a “Black Madonna” moment that transformed the Met Gala carpet into a gallery floor.
Her off-the-shoulder black gown, featuring a sweeping hood and opera-length gloves, was enhanced by gold body paint, metallic prosthetic hair, and painted tears.
As she told Vogue, “I don’t want to look like a human being. I want to look like a walking statue.” This sentiment captured her vision. However, this was not just a single moment of red carpet brilliance; it marked the beginning of a larger narrative.

This collaboration with Yai exemplifies Piccioli’s approach to fashion. He does not design for anonymous figures; instead, he works with muses to create living art.
In an interview, he explained, “You cannot arrive in a company and impose only your vision. You have to involve people in your own vision, in order to have not only their techniques, but also their passion, their enthusiasm, their love. That’s how you get the magic.”
Piccioli’s vision for Balenciaga couture blends the house’s heritage with his own romantic sensibility. His design process is instinctive and personal. “I start with drawings, but first I have to know what I want to say,” he explains.
His collaboration with Yai exemplifies this philosophy, creating a dialogue between designer and model. By selecting Anok Yai as opener, closer, and bride, Piccioli made a statement about the house’s future and embraced fashion as art.
