Gucci Transforms Times Square into a Chic Runway for Cruise 2027 Show

On May 16, 2026, Gucci transformed Times Square into a runway to debut its Cruise 2027 collection, GucciCore, under Creative Director Demna.

The event showcased Italian glamour amid the energy of midtown Manhattan and served as both a strategic homecoming and a statement of renewal for the Kering-owned brand. Gucci’s connection to New York began in 1953 with its first store outside Italy on Fifth Avenue.

Demna emphasized this heritage, calling the show a “homecoming” and stating, “I wanted to do the impossible and place Gucci at the centre of this metropolis.” By choosing Times Square, one of the world’s most visited locations, Gucci achieved global visibility, with the runway broadcast on large digital billboards.

It also reflects a broader trend of European luxury brands focusing on North American growth. As Gucci faces external sales challenges, this move demonstrates confidence and a renewed commitment to the U.S. market.

Drawing inspiration from Robert Longo’s “Men in the Cities” series, which portrays individuals in corporate attire in dynamic poses, Demna created a collection that celebrates the diversity of styles found in New York. Models represented city archetypes such as commuters, nighttime revelers, fitness enthusiasts, and professionals.

The GucciCore collection emphasizes enduring wardrobe staples over short-lived trends. It features business suits, pinstripes, trench coats, peacoats, pencil skirts, and shirts updated with Gucci’s signature style.

The collection blends daytime and evening looks, including low-rise jeans, crop tops, and evening gowns. Signature elements such as Horsebit motifs, the red-and-green Web stripe, and cocoon-like duvet stoles are prominent.

Models carried everyday items such as iPhones, bouquets, keys, and yoga mats, grounding the collection in urban reality. A limited-edition Gucci NY capsule featuring New York-inspired pieces was soon released at select boutiques and online, extending the show’s impact into retail.

The show included both models and celebrities. Cindy Crawford closed the event, while Paris Hilton, Tom Brady, and others also walked the runway.

The front row featured prominent figures, including Kim Kardashian, Mariah Carey, Anna Wintour, Lindsay Lohan, Shawn Mendes, Lewis Hamilton, Playboi Carti, Lil Uzi Vert, and Marc Jacobs. Their presence increased the event’s cultural impact, generated significant social media attention, and reinforced Gucci’s relevance across multiple industries.

This Cruise 2027 show is Demna’s first in the resort category for Gucci, following his mainline debut in Milan. Known for his work at Balenciaga, Demna brings a new perspective to Gucci while respecting its heritage. His focus on social archetypes continues to shape his leadership.

For Kering, the show comes at a critical time. Gucci, which contributes most of the group’s profits, experienced an 8% sales decline in the first quarter due to global challenges. Under new CEO Luca De Meo, Kering is pursuing a creative and commercial reset to improve profit margins. Demna’s appointment and this New York event are central to that strategy.

Cruise collections have become major global events that connect brand narratives to specific locations. Gucci’s Times Square show merges spectacle, heritage, accessibility, and aspiration. By elevating “commutercore” and celebrating individuality, Demna positions GucciCore as a collection of wearable, desirable staples for today’s consumer.
