Carine Roitfeld has proven to the world that fashion is not only a form of art or self-expression but a form of unity—at least, in this time of the global pandemic. As the fashion industry is still deliberating on how to pull off the upcoming fashion week in June, Roitfeld already has a solution by staging the first-ever virtual fashion show for her annual amfAR gala.
amfAR is an international nonprofit organization supporting AIDS research, HIV prevention, and treatment education but the foundation has refocussed its attention to help raise funds for the fight against Covid-19. For the event which normally takes place in Cannes, France, the famed fashion editor teamed up with CR Runway to take the project online, enlisting runway models around the world to strut the stuff from the comfort of their homes.
Today is the day! Join @CRFASHIONBOOK x @amfAR for #FashionUnites supporting the amfAR Fund to Fight COVID-19. The world’s first virtual fashion show will air TODAY at 1pm PT/4pm ET on https://t.co/91UdNY0qVm. More info: https://t.co/OsRjDgf1q4 #CRRunwayXamfAR pic.twitter.com/GQZlxfN6F5

“It’s not just to have fun,” Roitfeld sated. “It’s something to raise money for a great cause and put a smile on your face. Today I am not a fashion icon. My icons are these doctors, these nurses; the lady that [works] at a grocery store.”
The show features a host of notable faces in the fashion industry including Kim Kardashian. And from runway darlings, Irina Shayk to Adriana Lima, Winnie Harlow, Ashley Graham, Alessandra Ambrosio, Anok Yai, Halima Aden, Eva Herzigova, Stella Maxwell, and Candice Huffine, as well as Karen Elson and Halima Aden, Derek Blasberg, Youtube’s head of fashion and beauty said in the video that “this is supermodels supporting superheroes” as ‘fashion unites.’
Go ahead and watch the first of its kind video as the models prep themselves before transforming their homes into a runway.
