In 2017, there were different versions of accusations in the fashion industry (from Lupita Nyong’o calling out ‘Grazia’ magazine for editing out her natural hair to Adriana Lima’s rant on Instagram over societal standards of beauty, and more) and one would think 2018 has a great chance of coming with a breath of fresh air but it isn’t. Now, another VS model Nina Agdal has publicly called out a fashion magazine for body-shaming her.
Without mentioning the name of the magazine, the 25-year-old Danish beauty who is signed to IMG Models took to social media, claiming that the magazine pulled a cover story that she was featured in because she was not fit into their beauty standards. In her words, Agdal calls it the “very harsh reality of the industry.”
“Today, I’m disappointed and appalled at the still very harsh reality of this industry,” she wrote on Instagram. A few months ago, I agreed to shoot with a creative team I believed in and was excited to collaborate with. When my agent received an unapologetic email concluding they would not run my cover/story because it “did not reflect well on my talent” and “did not fit their market,” the publisher claimed my look deviated from my portfolio and that I did not fit into the (sample size) samples, which is completely false.
Agdal isn’t the only one facing the similar issue in the industry. From fashion weeks to magazine covers, it’s an issue that emanates on the regular and like the fashion model said, she has released an image to draw awareness and support of an issue that’s bigger than” herself but other women around the world.
