In recent times, fashion has taken a whimsical turn with the emergence of the coquette trend. It seems that the mainstream is finally catching up with this playful and childlike aesthetic.
However, for some, this trend can be quite tiring and spiritually disconnected. Selena Gomez, the popular singer and actress, is one such individual who seems to share this sentiment.
It is refreshing to witness the rise of the anti-coquette on the fall 2024 catwalks. Designers like Prada, Simone Rocha, and Dilara Findikoglu have showcased collections that feature organ-crunching corsets, bustles, and Victoriana bloomers.
While bows and ribbons were present, they took on a brittle quality in Findikoglu’s hourglass gowns and were uncontrollable swarms on Prada’s shift dresses. The hyper-feminine clichés that were once adored by coquettes have been repackaged as something dark, mysterious, and even funereal. They now invoke a sense of fear.
Selena Gomez is one of the first celebrities to embrace this brooding protagonist persona. During a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to promote her new single “Love On,” she donned a lace Givenchy leotard, a puffball Valentino skirt, and thigh-high Stuart Weitzman boots.
Her trademark dark locks were tied back with a black ribbon, and an enormous rose appliqué adorned her leather Valentino jacket. This ensemble exuded a chic spin on the coquette trend, showcasing Gomez’s ability to transform a playful aesthetic into something more sophisticated and intriguing.
