Beyoncé CFDA Style Icon Award Win Fashion Moment

While some folks opted for red carpet worthy dresses, Beyoncé played the cowboy role, wearing a very large black hat with a black suit adorned with swarovski crystals at this year’s CFDA Fashion Icon Award. Accepting the CFDA Fashion Icon Award, Queen Bey gave a shout-out speech, thanking her mother and grandmother, uncles for their unconditional support over the years. She also sent a special recognition to her mother and grandmother, who introduced her to fashion. According to Queen Bey, they were seamstresses that made clothes by hand when times were hard:

“I feel so much love and I feel so proud right now,” she said while accepting her award in a pinstriped, crystal-embellished Givenchy suit and a “Formation”-style wide-brim hat. “Thank you guys for this incredible honor.”

 

 

“As long as I can remember, fashion has always been a part of my life. It’s effect on me actually started before I was born,” she recalled. “Most of you guys don’t know this, but my grandmother was a seamstress. My grandparents did not have enough money, they could not afford my mother’s Catholic school tuition. So my grandmother sewed clothes for the priests and the nuns and made the uniform for the students in exchange for my mother’s education,” she said. 

“When we were starting out in Destiny’s Child, high-end labels, they didn’t really want to dress four black country curvy girls,” Beyoncé said. “And we couldn’t afford designer dresses and couture. My mother was rejected from every showroom in New York. But like my grandmother, she used her talent and her creativity to give her children their dreams.” Beyoncé revealed her mother designed many costumes for Destiny’s Child, as well as her prom dress, first CFDA dress and first Grammy dress.

She also extended her gratitude to every designer: — “I want to say thank you to every designer that works tirelessly to make people feel like they can write their own story.”
