Have you ever visited a close relative (maybe Aunty) with a friend and after all said and done, she whispers to you to tell your friend that next time she should try not to dress the way she did to her house? Well, back in the day when leggings were trending, I paid a casual visit to my aunt alongside my friend, who wore a black leggings with a blue short-sleeve checkered shirt that was a little above her waistline, showing off a generous amount of her posterior. We were about to leave when my aunty said to me privately “Nne, why are you children of nowadays like to dress like prostitutes? Biko, tell your friend to dress better than that next time”
At that point, for me, I was somewhat fuzzy at my Aunt’s expression. But taking a peek at my friend, I could see her derriere and her purple underwear clearly visible through her leggings and I said to myself, if her shirt was long enough to cover her backside, it would’ve saved us the embarrassment.
Now back to the main point, leggings as you know, appears to be one of a woman’s comfy wardrobe staple: let’s say Kendall Jenner can wear it with a crop top and white sneakers out and about town, while it’s a go-to favorite gym staple for Khloe Kardashian. But there’s a debate going on as to how best leggings can be worn. Is it okay to wear it as pants?
For that, Glamour recently conducted a study to get to the bottom of the disturbing issue, and their findings revealed that 61% of women are in support that leggings are not acceptable as pants unless they’re paired with a top that’s long enough to cover the backside.
Considering the aforementioned experience, and seeing Mercy Aigbe wearing it the right way (picture below), I agree with the women that leggings should be worn with long garments. (for instance, shirtdress). Scroll down to see some pictures:
