In today’s world, it’s more important than ever to be conscious of the impact our choices have on the environment. One way we can do this is by supporting sustainable fashion brands that use eco-friendly materials and sustainable practices.
Lerisa Paris is one such brand. Founded in 2021, the French sustainable fashion brand creates chic vegan handbags from sustainable materials that are sourced from suppliers who are committed to low-carbon production.
Lerisa’s handbags are also handmade, which means that they are produced without the use of any harmful chemicals or dyes. According to the founder, Elsa Ritter, her intention is purely based on contributing her quota to the environment, having learned the negative impact caused by the textile industry on the planet.
“I wanted to make my contribution by acting for the good of others,” said Elsa, the founder of Lerisa Paris. The leather industry being extremely polluting, my choice fell on the creation of a line of vegetable leather goods, a choice more respectful of humans, animals, and the planet.”
Why veganism?
Lerisa Paris uses veganism and sustainable practice as its main source of inspiration. As per the brand, it is more concerned about animal well-being and respect for ethical standards, thus the brand leverages the grape plant materials recycled from the grape pomace, an abundant by-product churned out by the wine industry in Italy.
The vegan handbag brand also partnered with Seaqual, a Spanish company that offers a strong commitment to fighting plastic pollution.
For Lerisa, the fabric used for the lining of the handbags is a Seaqual™ certified 100% recycled polyester textile from the recycling of plastic waste collected in the oceans.
This however, goes to show that the mission of the brand is not only helping to protect the planet but also helping to ensure that animals are not subjected to cruel and inhumane treatment in the production of fashion items. By using this ethical method to make their chic and elegant handbags, Lerisa Paris also proved that grape skin is a good alternative to animal leather.
The process:
The process of transforming the grape pomace into the quality and durable pieces of fashion can be a little bit tasking but the brand says it’s committed to the planet. In further explanation, it said, “recycling or disposal of these residues must be done in compliance with environmental standards.” Therefore, the process starts by dehydrating the residues to powder. Then the “Fine powder obtained is incorporated into vegetable oil, bio-PU, and recycled polyester,” where it is then cut, sewn, and put-together by their local artisans with a stamp of French aesthetic in their workshop in France.
Lerisa Paris’s debut collection offers a range of hand candies — from work-appropriate totes to sleek pouches for swanky and black-tie events. Coming in three colors (red, black, and beige), the price tag ranges from $53.496 to $369.122. To learn more about the brand or shop the handbag for yourself, visit Lerisa-paris.com.
What’s next for Lerisa?
With its first collection, it’s crystal clear that Lerisa Paris is taking the initiative in pushing the boundaries of sustainable fashion and seeking to design pieces that are fashionable, ethical, and eco-friendly. They are always looking for new ways to reduce their environmental impact, such as carbon emissions (which according to Carbonfact audit, their Le “L” handbag emits -64% CO2 compared to a comparable product) in their production processes and using recycled materials wherever possible.
