In a world where fashion is constantly evolving, it is refreshing to see designers take inspiration from the past and give it a modern twist. This is exactly what Maria Grazia Chiuri did with Dior’s Fall 2024 collection, paying homage to the iconic Miss Dior line from the 1960s.
The Miss Dior line, which was launched in 1967, marked a significant milestone for the luxury brand, as it transitioned from made-to-measure to ready-to-wear clothing.
It was a collection that appealed to the more youthful customer, much like the diffusion line by Philippe Guibourgé, who was then an assistant to the renowned designer Marc Bohan.
In the Fall 2024 Dior collection, Chiuri reimagined the decade-long collection with a modern and youthful appeal. One of the highlights of the runway show presented during Paris Fashion Week on Tuesday was the subtle references to the Space Age.
While the Miss Dior logo was boldly emblazoned on skirts, trench coats, and blazers, the collection also featured go-go boots, mini skirts, metallic colorways, plaid, and leopard print – all hallmarks of late ‘60s fashion.
However, this collection goes beyond a literal interpretation of 1960s fashion. Instead, Dior looks at the “transitional era” that witnessed the sexual revolution and women’s liberation movement. This is evident in the denim sets that exude a relaxed vibe even in the context of Dior’s more modern-leaning collections.
The runway also showcased sheer tops that revealed lingerie, pushing the boundaries of fashion and celebrating female empowerment. One particularly intriguing look featured a bra worn over a turtleneck, showcasing Dior’s fearless approach to defying traditional fashion norms.
Additionally, the collection included menswear-inspired suiting that perfectly complemented today’s loosened workwear dress codes. The suits added a touch of sophistication and elegance while maintaining a modern and youthful edge.
Models were also seen in knee-high boots that revealed gladiator sandal-like buckle open backs, a unique and unexpected twist. These boots were paired with a range of effortlessly feminine outerwear, creating a fresh and contemporary look.
One cannot talk about Dior without mentioning their iconic handbags. There were new iterations of the ever-popular Lady Dior handbags and Sac Dior Book totes. These accessories added a touch of elegance and sophistication to the collection, perfectly complementing the modern yet timeless aesthetic.
It is no surprise that Dior, a brand that made a name for itself through its haute couture, showcased a range of dresses with intricate beading and shift gowns. These designs paid homage to the fashion of Catherine Deneuve in the ’60s, a true icon of that era. This blend of masculine and feminine aesthetics showcased the progressive and inclusive vision of Dior.
