The coronavirus pandemic is currently a major concern, prompting the cancellation of social events or any large gatherings. So far, various of these social events scheduled for this period around the world have either been postponed or canceled in other to curb the continuous spread of the virus.
In the wake of this concern, fashion’s biggest gathering, the Met Gala has postponed its 2020 annual event indefinitely. The fashion event known to take place on the first Monday in May is being postponed until after the coronavirus outbreak dies down.
“One day that will not arrive on schedule will be the opening of the Costume Institute’s exhibition, About Time,” Anna Wintour officially confirmed the postponement on Vogue. “Due to the unavoidable and responsible decision by the Metropolitan Museum to close its doors, About Time, and the opening night gala, will not take place on the date scheduled. In the meantime, we will give you a preview of this extraordinary exhibition in our forthcoming May issue.”
For this year’s Met Gala, the theme is attributed to time as fashion represents the spirit of the times. “Fashion is indelibly connected to time”, Andrew Bolton, the curator of the Costume Institute, explained to the New York Times. “It not only reflects and represents the spirit of the times, but it also changes and develops with the times.
As compared to the previous year’s ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ theme, which had celebrities arrived at the event in the most, ultra, over-the-top looks, the 2020 event as connected to time, will reportedly take the inspiration from Sally Porter’s 1992 film Orlando, based on Virginia Woolf’s time-traveling novel of the same name, which expresses time as a flux.
