In recent years, addressing diversity and inclusivity has been a topical issue in the fashion industry, with models of color and plus-size women chanting and panting every season because of underrepresentation. Well, it appears there’s still a long way to go judging from the new Fall 2017 sneakers by Dolce & Gabbana.
Although the Italian brand is not new when it comes to causing controversies — in the past, the brand had named a pair of shoes “slave sandals,” and calling vitro children “synthetic” but this time around, it’s about fat women. Designer Stefano Gabbana recently posted a leg of embellished white sneakers adorned with graphics, scribbly imprinted words and sequins on his personal Instagram page that immediately triggered the anger of some commenters. According to them, words like, “I’M THIN & GORGEOUS,” written on the sneaker were directed to fat women.
“You don’t think it’s a little unresponsible [sic] to push a message of ‘Thin and gorgeous’? I hope this will be followed by a message of inclusion of all bodies?” a commenter with handle @anna.elisabeth.olsson wrote. Another commenter, @rossy_rl added, “thin?! 😵 I’m disappointed!”
But guess what? Stefano did not cool things off, instead he fired back on the commenters with more rude messages, asking whether being fat is worthy of celebration. “u think is better to be fat full of hamburger??? Stupid,” and another from the designer read, “darling you prefer to be fat and full of cholesterol??? I think u have a problem.”
