Rita Dominic is set to grace the big screen once again with her enigmatic act in the upcoming movie titled “77: The FESTAC Conspiracy.”
Casting a glance back into the annals of history, the FESTAC ’77 stands as an iconic milestone, an event that illuminated the rich cultural diversity of Africa and its diaspora, fostering a sense of unity and pride among its participants, while also challenging negative stereotypes associated with African cultures.
Directed by Izu Ojukwu, “77” is a thrilling invitation into the succession of “76, the movie”. Just two days before the Second World African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC) in 1977, the story unfolds around an angry ex-serviceman who receives an invitation to join a movement that aims to challenge the continent’s prevailing political norms.
With a narrative that potentially revolves around the Festac ’77 Arts and Culture Festival in Lagos, the movie tightly grasps control of our eager anticipation, reuniting talented individuals such as Ramsey Nouah, Rita Dominic, and director Izu Ojukwu, with a promise to deliver a continuation of historical excitement on screen.
Ramsey Nouah takes on the role of Captain Dewa, Rita Dominic as Suzie, Daniel K Daniel as Corporal Obi, and Ibinabo Fiberesima as Angelina/Angela. Additionally, Soibifaa Dokubo (Soole) stars as the Leader of the Free Africa Movement in the movie.
In her Instagram update, Dominic is seen on a voluminous afro hairstyle and attire that harkens back to the 70s, vividly representing Nigeria with its green and white theme. “This was a very nostalgic ride. Can’t wait to see you all in 77,” the actress captioned the photo on Instagram.
FESTAC, a name resonating far beyond the contours of Lagos, serves as more than a mere geographical label. The Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture —FESTAC ’77 — etched its presence as a global cultural pinnacle. This monumental event unfolded its splendor in Lagos, Nigeria, from January 15 to February 12, 1977. Orchestrated by the Nigerian government under the astute leadership of General Olusegun Obasanjo, FESTAC ’77, till today, radiates as a Pan-African movement that spotlighted the diversity of black people across the world.
Through Rita Dominic’s expected performance in “77: The FESTAC Conspiracy”, we await a resplendent showcase of the grandest All-Black and African Arts Festival to have ever graced the continent’s history.
