Viola Davis’s 2025 Golden Globes Gown Was Actually a Re-Worn Dress

Sustainability was at the forefront for Viola Davis at the 85th annual Golden Globes.

The EGOT winner made a striking statement at the 2025 Golden Globes by stepping onto the red carpet in a re-worn black sequined Gucci gown. This choice highlights the growing trend of sustainability in fashion, especially on the glitzy awards circuit. By re-wearing outfits, celebrities like Davis are setting a powerful example of how elegance and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.

The gown, first donned by the “Woman King” actress at the LACMA Art + Film Gala just two months prior, features a V-neckline adorned with a striking sequin stripe effect that extends across her bodice.

The skirt mirrors this design, creating a cohesive and sophisticated silhouette that emphasizes the beauty of simplicity. The black sequined gown not only flatters Davis’s figure but also embodies the timeless elegance typically expected at such prestigious events.

While the gown itself is a vision of glamour, it was Davis’s innovative accessorizing that truly transformed her look for the Golden Globes. In November, she paired the dress with a black striped cape that wrapped around her shoulders, adding a dramatic flair.

For the Golden Globes, however, she opted for a striking rainbow-colored cape that alternated hues, providing a vibrant contrast to the classic black gown. The custom Swarovski earrings, cascading down to her collarbone, offered an additional touch of luxury, ensuring all eyes were on this remarkable star.

A Moment of Reflection

Following the awards ceremony, Davis took to Instagram to share her thoughts and a series of photos showcasing her exquisite look. In her post, she expressed gratitude and inspiration, stating, “My Golden Globes Look 🖤💜💛🩷💚🖤. A revelatory evening. I see my ‘legacy’ more clearly than ever. I’m…inspired. Thank you Golden Globes for this honor. It has sparked a flame ❤️❤️🙏🏿.”

Her words underscore the significance of this awards event and the personal resonance of her attire and the choices she makes.

Ahead of the ceremony, Davis’s stylist, Stewart, spoke to Vogue about the decision to re-wear the stunning gown, emphasizing how much Davis loved it upon trying it on again. “When we actually tried it with everyone from Gucci there in the room Viola loved it and said something like, ‘I would wear this a thousand times!’ ”

This choice reinforces an important conversation within the fashion industry about the growing trend of re-wearing and conscious consumption, especially on high-profile occasions such as award ceremonies.

He continued: “While in our first Gucci fitting we all immediately started dreaming,” Stewart said. “What if she did wear it again? How would [Gucci creative director] Sabato [De Sarno] make a great dress even greater?”

“A rainbow is a symbol of hope and happiness in a dark time. Very meaningful for Viola who never does anything without purpose,” Stewart continued. “The dramatic, bold but classic style made me feel like I was stepping into the woman I’ve always been….and dreamed of being.”

“We wouldn’t have thought to rewear it so soon but with Viola receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes, we realized what a perfect choice this would be,” the celebrity stylist said. “I think sustainability is what we should all be striving for, in any small way we can, and the fashion world, with its visibility and impact, has an opportunity to help lead the charge.”

According to the report, Davis wasn’t the only celebrity who re-wore a designer dress at the 2025 Golden Globes. Australian actor and film producer, Cate Blanchett arrived at the red carpet in a custom Louis Vuitton gown — the same look she wore eight months ago at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in May.

As the conversation around sustainability continues to evolve, Viola Davis and Cate Blanchett’s fashion choices stand as a poignant reminder that elegance and eco-friendliness can go hand in hand, inspiring others to embrace a similar mindset in their wardrobe selections.
