At the MET Gala, surprises come in all forms, and this year did not flip on it. The tennis champion, Serena Williams, is expecting baby number two!
Serena William’s arrival at the Met Gala caused a stir of excitement, as she proudly showed off her beautiful baby bump. Joined by her doting husband and internet entrepreneur, Alexis Ohanian, the couple posed for photos that captured the essence of a regal pregnancy announcement, highlighting Serena’s growing belly and the radiant glow that comes with being a mom-to-be.
Just before stepping onto the coveted MET Gala red carpet, she turned to her massive following on Instagram to share the news, revealing that she and Alexis Ohanian were thrilled to be expanding their family once again. In her words, “Was so excited when Anna Wintour invited the 3 of us to the Met Gala.” With “us,” she meant herself, her beloved husband Alexis Ohanian, and their unborn child.
On and off the courts, Serena is a beauty to behold. At the “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” event, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion showcased her distinctive and refined playing style with poise, dressed in a black and white ensemble that was hard to miss. Her mermaid-shaped gown was perfectly complemented by a dazzling Gucci bolero jacket, adorned with sparkling jewels that shimmered in the light and a breezy white chiffon skirt that flowed into a long train.
To top it all off, cascading pearl necklaces graced her neck and adorned her hair. Serena’s makeup was flawlessly executed with dark eyeliner and a berry lip, and her hair was slicked back into a neat bob. Her partner, Ohanian, equally looked sharp and sleek in a classic black tuxedo, completing the duo’s red-carpet look.
Last year, Serena Williams announced her retirement from tennis to prioritize her family’s growth. In Vogue’s September 2022 issue, she expressed her enthusiasm for the next chapter of her life, which will be centered on motherhood and other exciting endeavors.
“Earlier in my career, I never thought about having kids,” she said. “There were times when I’ve wondered if I should ever bring kids into this world, with all its problems. I was never that confident or comfortable around babies or children, and I figured that if I ever did have a baby, I would have people taking care of it 24/7. I’m not going to lie—I definitely have a lot of support. But I’m also an incredibly hands-on mother. My husband will tell you I am too hands-on. In five years, Olympia has only spent one 24-hour period away from me.”
She also explained in an interview with Time that “there is no anger” around her decision. “I’m ready for the transition,” she added, which will include further evolving as a parent. “I think I’m good at it,” Williams said of being a mom. “But I want to explore if I can be great at it.”
