Lupita Nyong’o is renowned for her acting as much as she is for her fashion status and the actress proved once again last night when she attended the 2023 Tony Awards held on Sunday night in New York City.
Making a departure from the usual red carpet glamour, the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star opted for a bold fashion statement as she dressed up in a black velvet suit jacket and trousers, an ensemble she layered over a silver custom-made breastplate that gives an illusion on a human body.

As explained by the actress on social media, the custom piece was created for her body by a Pakistani artist Misha Japanwala, who ‘creates a realistic and true record of a person’s body as an act of resistance and celebration, and an insistence on being allowed to exist freely in our bodies.’
“Honored, humbled, strengthened and energized to don this breastplate created by @mishajapanwala, which she cast and molded of my body,” Nyong’o captioned her look on Instagram. “Misha Japanwala is a Pakistani artist and fashion designer, whose work is rooted in the rejection and deconstruction of external shame attached to one’s body. In her artistic process, she creates a realistic and true record of a person’s body as an act of resistance and celebration, and an insistence on being allowed to exist freely in our bodies.”

Nyong’o however added to her look with a red lip and black eyeshadow. Her henna-tattooed shaved head by artist Sabeen Marghoob that she revealed last month added more interest as she accessorized the look with a Venezia box clutch by The Bella Rosa Collection, geometric silver rings, and large diamond stud earrings.
The annual Tony Awards celebrates the best plays and musicals of the year, and of course, the stars and crew who bring them to life. For the 76th Tony Awards that took place on June 11 at the United Palace, NYC, Kimberly Akimbo won big for the coveted Tony Award for Best Musical, while Sean Hayes won the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a leading role in a play.
