The 2025 Met Gala Red-Carpet Looks That Speak Dandyism
The first Monday in May has become a staple on the fashion calendar, and last night was no exception as stars flocked to New York City for the highly anticipated 2025 Met Gala.
This annual event supports the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute and celebrates notable themes that reflect cultural significance in the realm of style.
This year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” draws inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s groundbreaking 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.
The exhibit seeks to explore and spotlight Black culture from the 18th century to the modern-day, all through the intricate lens of dandyism. This theme not only highlights the importance of sartorial elegance in the formation of Black identities but also serves as a reminder of how fashion intersects with history and culture.
In keeping with the thematic essence, the 2025 Met Gala dress code, “Tailored for You,” invited attendees to embrace menswear and suiting, allowing for personal interpretations of dandyism. The celebrity co-chairs—Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, and A$AP Rocky—donned outfits that embodied the spirit of the event. LeBron James graced the stage as honorary chair, further emphasizing the gala’s focus on extraordinary tailoring and the homage to Black culture through fashion.
Louis Vuitton, the esteemed French luxury house of which Pharrell Williams serves as creative director of menswear, played a pivotal role as the event’s sponsor. The collaboration between Williams’ vision and the intricate craftsmanship of Louis Vuitton set the bar high for the sartorial experiences on the red carpet.
As the stars descended the steps of the Metropolitan Museum, it was evident that they intended to make powerful statements through their attire. From immaculate suits that embraced bold colors and intricate patterns to elegantly tailored ensembles that showcased fine craftsmanship, each look was a tribute to the essence of dandyism.
