The 2024 Lagos Fashion Week has come to a close after five days filled with exciting shows and inspiring initiatives. This year’s fashion week showcased the vibrant creativity of Nigerian designers, and also fostered discussions on sustainable practices within the industry, marking a significant shift towards a more environmentally conscious approach to fashion.
Hosted at the iconic Federal Palace Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos Fashion Week boasted an impressive lineup featuring renowned Nigerian fashion labels.
Designers such as Ejiro Amos Tafiri, Ugo Monye, Imad Eduso, FIA, and Cynthia Abila took center stage, showcasing collections that captivated audiences with their unique aesthetics and craftsmanship. Meanwhile, other acclaimed designers like Banke Kuku and Wanni Fuga opted for independent venues to showcase their new collections.
Sustainability emerged as a pivotal theme during the event. Banke Kuku, known for her vibrant prints and textures, unveiled a collection inspired by the ocean, highlighting the beauty and fragility of marine ecosystems. This commitment to sustainable fashion resonated with other designers as well, signaling a collective shift towards practices that honor both craftsmanship and environmental responsibility.
Ejiro Amos Tafiri transitioned from the conventional by including children in her runway presentation, aptly titled ‘The Symphony of Convergence.’ This collection celebrated the fusion of traditional and contemporary styles, creating garments for both adults and children that express the richness of Nigerian heritage. Each piece showcased exquisite textiles and the artistry of craftsmanship, emphasizing the timeless nature of style that transcends generations.
The fashion scene was further enriched by the participation of designers from other African nations. Ivorian designer Loza Maleombho wowed audiences with a striking collection characterized by dramatic cuts and silhouettes, pushing the boundaries of traditional design. Ghana-based label, Ajabeng, also presented a selection of effortless, tailored looks, demonstrating the diverse fashion narratives across the continent.
From spectacular gowns that echoed the depth of African heritage to innovative sustainable pieces that reflected the contemporary ethos, Lagos Fashion Week proved once again to be a vital platform for creative expression and cultural dialogue within the fashion industry. Here, we round up the best looks that descended the runway.
