Nairobi may be the capital of Kenya but it’s also the center of fashion in East Africa. It is where the famous and vibrant Dashiki shirt (a.k.a Kitenge) originated from, so you can imagine what it’s like to have the Nairobi Fashion Week in the region.
Founded by Brian Kihindas, the first installation of Nairobi Fashion Week dubbed “Just Fashion” took place on 21st April at the Chez Sonia, a laid-back atmosphere and lush suburb, where guests were treated to an unforgettable afternoon of creativity with a mix of fashion and art — ranging from stunning visual art displays by Little Art Gallery, to the showcase of the beautiful wardrobe pieces from five selected designers: Deepa Dosaja, Inna Design, Kenya Nashipai Leather, Normand Ayats and Maisha By Nisria.
The event also featured a panel discussion on sustainable fashion moderated by media personality Yvonne Ndege with Katrin Aidnell, the Regional Environment and Climate Change Specialist, Betterman Simidi, the General Manager of Africa Collect Textiles and Deepa Dosaja, a pioneer in Sustainable fashion. The discussion revolved around the need for a just and green transition of the fashion industry in the country.
As for the collections, the 2023 Nairobi Fashion Week was deeply centered around sustainable fashion. And one of the major highlights was the brand Deepa Dosaja, a known sustainable and conscious fashion label in the region, which was seen showcasing pieces that made a strong case for ethical fashion. As seen in the photo, a model could be seen sporting an environmentally-conscious dress that came complete with words such as Resist, Reuse, Rethink, Biodiovisity, and more, boldly written for the showgoers.
If you love authentic leather bags, there was a good collection from Kenya Naishipai, who showcased vibrant carryalls in different hues and textures.
Maisha Design, an African-inspired fashion label founded by Kenyan designer and entrepreneur Rakhee Shah with the aim to resurrect the culture and skills of the artisans, showcased pieces that featured avant-garde jackets with patchwork that served as beautiful adornments.
All in all, the Nairobi Fashion Week is here to stay and we are loving every bit from the East African fashion designers.
