Invisible zippers are a unique option for your garment or gear. Learn some of the benefits of these zippers and why they’re more than meets the eye.
I always love to pay attention to the little details of clothing. When I look at things like what manufacturer of buttons a piece uses or how designers position the seams, it opens up a world of creativity and new ideas on how I can work with a piece or make some adjustments to feel as authentic as possible. One of the best feelings is when there’s a zipper that I can’t actually see because there are many benefits of an invisible zipper that go beyond what we can see with our eyes.
Enhances the Look
I can never enjoy wearing a fancy dress without worrying about whether the zipper is sticking out. It’s such an awkward, uncomfortable feeling to think people behind me can see a giant metal or plastic zipper going up my back. Naturally, the most apparent advantage of an invisible zipper is that it’s hidden.
Many garments, like dresses and jackets, keep the slider and the track on the inside of the clothing. So, instead of those big, closed metal teeth, all people see is a thin, more natural-looking seam. While some clothing options try to accentuate the slider as part of the aesthetic through unique shapes or bright colors like gold or silver, invisible zippers take a different approach. Many invisible zipper sliders disguise themselves with a thin, tear-shaped slider that matches the color of the zipper, tape, and garment to help it blend in and not create any visual distractions.
Adds Extra Protection
One of the other benefits of an invisible zipper that I’ve noticed is that keeping it tucked away helps protect it from extra damage. I don’t have to worry too much about dirt and damage with a lovely dress or skirt. Still, when I find a purse or duffel bag with a zipper that helps protect the contents from exterior elements, it definitely helps knowing I have less to worry about with it.
With the added protection also comes easier maintenance of the zipper itself. One of the most common problems with any zipper is when it gets stuck or jammed. If it does get damaged, there are plenty of quick ways to repair an invisible zipper. In most cases, you just need to use a small brush to clean out the teeth or invest in some zipper lubricant. If you don’t want to spend money on lubricant, you can use some home remedies. Rubbing a little pencil graphite around the slider is one of the most classic home repair options.
Easy To Sew
Because manufacturers install invisible zippers away from the garment’s exterior, they’re surprisingly easy to sew. With invisible zippers, we typically see only the very top of the slider, which is generally smaller than most other models. When you sew an invisible zipper into a garment, you don’t need to worry about topstitching since it will hide itself in the seam.
Needlepoint nooks can also be used in this case but to ensure that your invisible zipper stays straight, we recommend using pins to keep it securely in place. A helpful tip when sewing your seam is to backstitch at the beginning and end because that will help your zipper remain stable and secure.
