Ugochi Latoya Igwilo may not be a famous name in the Nigerian modelling industry, but the young model will soon become a household in the asian market.

Ugochi started her modelling career just like most of the successful models out there through self-motivation. When the 23years-old Nigerian born model took the bull by the horns, little did know that she was going to be the next big thing in fashion. The model according to her left Nigeria for India about five and a half years ago as a student to study interior design at a college in Noida with no friends or mentor; but today, the tall, slender and confident model became the first black or Nigerian model to walk the runway at Lakme Fashion Week 2015 (LKW), one of fashion’s most celebrated platforms in India.

“When I came to India, I did not have a plan. I had no friends or mentors. The journey to success hasn’t been easy. But looking back, I feel the struggle was worth it. My parents and siblings are very proud of me today,” says the 23 year old, Ugochi Latoya Igwilo.

Since her Lakme Fashion Week 2015 debut, Ugochi has been garnering attention from successful Asian designers, and literally, her best is yet to come.

“I am not the most conventional face here, so a few designers are apprehensive to work with me. But again, there is also a certain level of excitement of working with an African model, which I really like. It’s great that designers are willing to experiment and take chances,” say Ugochi.

“It was something my father suggested. He’s a businessman who has work connections here and it was his idea. I thought it was a good opportunity for me to move out of my country and explore another one. It was when I was studying there that I started doing fashion shows for college festivals and events.”

She further adds, “Then one day I decided to get a portfolio and approach some agencies and choreographers. That’s how I started.”

For her, she watches and learn from successful models to be on the right track.

“I watch a lot of fashion television and music videos to pick up the charisma and poise needed on stage. I do a lot of research too. I know that a lot of models here have been in the business for a very long time, I have watched them on television and leant. Even if they don’t give me any advice, they’re open and approachable,” she says.

In her recent photo shoots photographed by Simran Suri, and with her sleek and slender body, Ugochi proved that she’s ready break new grounds in the modelling world.
