Puma is Tapping A$AP Rocky as the Creative Director For its Formula 1 Collaboration
Fashion and sport have long been intertwined, and the latest collaboration between Puma and A$AP Rocky is taking this convergence to new heights. Puma, the sportswear giant, has appointed A$AP Rocky as the creative director for its Formula 1 partnership. This move not only aims to expand Puma’s audience but also to capitalize on the growing intersection between streetwear and motorsports.
In May, Puma signed a groundbreaking multi-year licensing deal that allows them to exclusively produce and sell Formula 1 apparel, footwear, and merch. With A$AP Rocky at the helm as the creative director, the brand is poised to make a big impact in the world of motorsports.
The first release from this collaboration will be a limited edition collection of accessories and apparel, which will be unveiled at the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix in late November. Teaser images showcase Rocky donning a stylish black tracksuit emblazoned with both the Puma and Formula 1 logos. He also sports racing gloves and a pair of eye-catching Puma “Inhale” sneakers in red, orange, and white.
“These are some key silhouettes I’ve been starting out with, trialling different designs and techniques,” Rocky told BoF. “I’m focussed on seamlessly blending in these classic streetwear looks without it feeling forced or tacky.”
Looking ahead to next year, Rocky will be designing a series of capsule collections that are connected to high-profile Formula 1 races throughout the 2024 season. Alongside his design responsibilities, he will also be tasked with hosting in-person activations at each race, as well as overseeing the marketing for each collection release.
But the collaboration doesn’t stop there. By the 2025 season, Puma intends to grant Rocky wider creative control over the entire Puma-Formula 1 partnership. This means that he will have creative input not only in the production of racewear and fanwear but also in the creation of fashion-forward collections that push boundaries and defy conventions.
A$AP Rocky is no stranger to the fashion world. He has established himself as a tastemaker and trendsetter, collaborating with renowned brands such as Dior, JW Anderson, and Guess Originals. His unique sense of style and keen understanding of the fashion landscape make him an ideal fit for this role as Puma’s creative director.
With this collaboration, Puma is aiming to tap into the growing popularity of streetwear and its influence on motorsports. By partnering with A$AP Rocky, they are not only bridging the gap between fashion and sport but also staying at the forefront of cultural trends. This move is a strategic one that will undoubtedly help Puma reach new heights in the Formula 1 world and beyond.
