Leggings are not what it used to be again. I mean, back in the days there were notably known to be worn for sporting activities but the style set has reimagined the activewear into streetwear in recent years. In fact, wearing leggings outside the sporting terrain was so ubiquitous until it was dubbed the athleisure fashion trend you see everywhere today. But in as much as the tight underwear makes one of the comfiest wardrobe essentials to strut around, South Carolina school principal, Heather Taylor, doesn’t want it to be seen on her female students — “unless you are a size zero or two.”
According to WCBD News 2 report, Taylor who is the Principal of Stratford High School was recorded during a discussion with ninth and tenth graders on Wednesday, saying, “I’ve told you this before, I’m going to tell you this now, unless you are a size zero or two and you wear something like that, even though you’re not fat, you look fat.”
While the statement may sound a bit body-shaming, the school dress code clearly warns students from wearing tight undies without a long shirt. “Leggings, tights, yoga pants and spandex must be worn under clothing that cover to mid-thigh,” the dress code published on the school’s website.
Although Taylor was noted to have “apologized almost immediately and profusely” and saying, she’s “one of their biggest fans and invested in their success,” she was still unlucky to get away with the statements as criticism was pouring in from the people who found it offensive. Many even wrote on the school’s Facebook page she should be fired. “I am going to say this until I am blue in the face, it is NEVER okay to body shame ANYONE, and ESPECIALLY young teenage girls,” Jackie Caldwell wrote.
“This is absolutely terrible. Teenage girls need better leadership than this. Totally unacceptable behavior. Dress code and body size shouldn’t even be discussed together since the dress code applies to EVERYONE,” Jena Procter added.
