Met Gala 2026: Everything You Need to Know About the Dress Code
The wait is finally over.
On February 23, 2026, Vogue officially unveiled the dress code for the 2026 Met Gala: “Fashion is Art.” Set for Monday, May 4, 2026, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, this year’s theme promises to be one of the most open-ended, intellectually rich, and creatively liberating in recent memory.
With Beyoncé making a triumphant return as co-chair after a decade away, alongside Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour, the 2026 Met Gala is already shaping up to be an unforgettable celebration of the dressed body as a living work of art.
The dress code directly mirrors the Costume Institute’s spring 2026 exhibition, titled “Costume Art,” which opens to the public on May 10 and runs through January 10, 2027.
Curated by Andrew Bolton, the Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute, the exhibition marks a historic milestone: it is the first show to occupy the brand-new, nearly 12,000-square-foot Condé M. Nast Galleries adjacent to the museum’s Great Hall.
Bolton describes the exhibition as exploring “the centrality of the dressed body” across the Met’s vast 5,000-year collection. Garments, both historical and contemporary, will be paired with paintings, sculptures, and objects from every curatorial department, proving that fashion is the common thread connecting the entire museum.
Photo: Instagram/vogue “Fashion is art” is deliberately broad, giving fashion designers and guests maximum creative freedom while staying true to the exhibition’s ethos. As Bolton explained, the theme challenges attendees to view the body as a blank canvas and to consider how clothing has always been intertwined with artistic expression. Guests are encouraged to explore ideas such as:
- Bodies most commonly represented in art history
- Bodies historically sidelined (aging, pregnant, non-binary, or disabled forms)
- Universal anatomical forms that transcend time and culture
This could translate to sculptural silhouettes that mimic classical statues, outfits that look like wearable paintings, living artworks that blur the line between fashion and performance, or conceptual pieces that comment on representation and identity. The directive feels both cerebral and playful; a perfect invitation for the kind of boundary-pushing creativity the Met Gala is famous for.
The star power behind the 2026 edition is undeniable. Beyoncé’s return as co-chair is the biggest headline. The global icon last attended in 2016 for the “Manus x Machina” theme and has made only sporadic appearances since, making her 2026 involvement a major moment.
Joining her are Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour (who remains deeply involved even after stepping down as editor-in-chief of American Vogue). The Host Committee is co-chaired by Anthony Vaccarello (Saint Laurent) and Zoë Kravitz, with an impressive lineup that includes Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, Teyana Taylor, Misty Copeland, Elizabeth Debicki, Lena Dunham, LISA, Sam Smith, and more. Honorary chairs are Lauren Sánchez and Jeff Bezos, marking their first major role in the gala.

Past Met Gala dress codes like “Camp: Notes on Fashion” (2019), “Gilded Glamour” (2022), and “Superfine: Tailoring Black Styles” (2025) pushed boundaries and generated unforgettable red-carpet moments. “Fashion is Art” feels like a natural culmination; a meta-statement that directly addresses the long-running debate: Is fashion art? Bolton hopes this exhibition and dress code will finally lay that question to rest.
Expectations for the red carpet are sky-high. Attendees may draw from art history (think Renaissance portraits reimagined as gowns, or living sculptures inspired by Greek and Roman statuary), experiment with texture and form (oversized silhouettes, painted fabrics, 3D embellishments), or make bold statements about representation and the body.
With Beyoncé co-chairing, many are hoping for a show-stopping moment that rivals her iconic 2015 “China: Through the Looking Glass” appearance or her 2016 Givenchy moment. The presence of athletes like Venus Williams and A’ja Wilson, musicians like Sabrina Carpenter and Doja Cat, and actors like Elizabeth Debicki suggests a rich mix of influences from athletic precision to cinematic drama to pop-star flair.

It celebrates the dressed body not as mere decoration but as a powerful medium of expression, storytelling, and cultural commentary. For designers, it offers license to be as artistic as they dare. For guests, it’s an open canvas literally and figuratively.
As the countdown to May 4 begins, one thing is certain: the 2026 Met Gala red carpet will be more than a parade of pretty dresses. It will be a living, breathing exhibition — a night where fashion doesn’t just attend the museum, it becomes part of the collection.
With Beyoncé back in the building, an all-star co-chair lineup, and a theme that invites true creativity, this year’s gala is poised to be one of the most artistic, memorable, and conversation-starting nights in Met Gala history.
