There’s no denial that the fashion industry has recorded a major diversity problem over the years – even with a greater media coverage and the work of advocacy organizations, the rate of survival for black models are always seem to be slim. Few days ago, it was reported that a black supermodel Bethann Hardison slammed agencies for ‘holding back’ models of color – making it difficult for designers to work with a diverse range of women, and that resulted to the huge percentage (79.4%) of white models we all saw on this season’s runways.
However, while 79.4% of the models were white, the most popular model to walk the runway from New York, London, Milan to Paris was a black model, Lineisy Montero, according to BoF. As Models.com reported, the 19-year-old from Dominican Republic walked in 68 shows – beating every other model, even Kendall Jenner. She was seen everywhere in all the four cities and strutting the runways for Derek Lam, Jason Wu, Miu Miu, Joseph, Koché, Givenchy, Giles, Versace and Louis Vuitton, to name just a few.
Walking 68 shows during Fashion Month has never been recorded for any black model, the 19-year-old black beauty who’s signed with NEXT Models has broken that record. Meaning? A good sign of hope and we’re particularly elated about her success. Get inspired!
