Hermès Designer, Véronique Nichanian, Bids Farewell After 37 Years

After nearly four decades with the iconic French luxury house Hermès, designer Véronique Nichanian presented her final collection on a sparkling Saturday during Paris Fashion Week.

The moment marked the close of an illustrious chapter in the world of menswear, as Nichanian, at 71 years old, prepared to pass the torch to emerging talent Grace Wales Bonner.

Nichanian’s tenure, which began with her debut collection in 1988, has been characterized by a reverence for craftsmanship and a dedication to creating elegant yet contemporary menswear. Under her mentorship, the Hermès men’s division has flourished, establishing a reputation synonymous with class, quality, and innovation.

Held at the Grand Palais Brongniart, the final collection presentation attracted a more star-studded crowd than usual, a nod to the designer’s remarkable influence within the fashion industry. R&B star Usher mingled with Hermès executive chairman Axel Dumas, highlighting the collection’s significance that resonated beyond the typical luxury consumer.

Models showcased designs in a refined palette of navy blue, black, and taupe, featuring silk turtlenecks and sleek leather trousers. Signature overcoats were adorned with leather patches and luxurious shearling linings. Among the standout pieces was a striking khaki crocodile-skin suit, which encapsulated Nichanian’s daring yet sophisticated aesthetic.

The collection also paid homage to her legacy, incorporating beloved pieces from earlier lines, including a navy leather suit from 2003 and a mocha calfskin jumpsuit from 1991. Flashes of vibrant orange and yellow provided a dynamic energy to the otherwise understated look.

As the show concluded, Nichanian received a well-deserved standing ovation from the enthusiastic audience, which included celebrated designer Paul Smith, rapper Travis Scott, and actors James McAvoy and Chace Crawford. This emotional farewell underscored the profound impact she has had on the fashion world over her extensive career.

Following Nichanian’s departure, the reins will be handed over to Grace Wales Bonner, a 36-year-old British designer who will make her debut collection for Hermès in a year.

Bonner’s appointment marks a historic milestone, as she becomes the first woman of color to lead a major Paris fashion house—a significant move towards greater diversity in the luxury sector.
