Rihanna is gearing up to take the world into an unforgettable musical experience at the 2023 Super Bowl Halftime Show. As the show is set to take place On Sunday, February 12, fans of the Barbados singer are in high anticipation to see the new mom hit the stage again, seven years after she last performed on a major stage.
Following the halftime show, Rihana attended a press conference yesterday and in an interview with Apple Music Radio host Nadeska Alexis, she spoke about the upcoming event and dropped some hints about what to expect. For the conference, the 34-year-old looked pretty as usual in an ensemble plugged out from Alaïa’s spring 2023 ready-to-wear collection.
In the usual Riri way, she wore a black leather coat with dark brown shearling in a way that revealed a generous amount of skin. Rihanna then teamed the luxe number with a sparkling silver croc-embossed patterned skirt with thigh-high leg slits that played up her snakeskin lace-up heels. She finished the look with silver accessories including a choker necklace and hoops earrings, as well as her signature red lip.
“It feels like it could have only been now,” Rihanna spoke about her Super Bowl gig. “I mean, when I first got the call to do it again this year, I was like, ‘Psst, you sure?’ I’m three months postpartum, like, should I be making major decisions like this now? Like I might regret this.”
Rihanna was no doubt nervous when she first received the call for the show, but however, the “Lift Me Up” singer decided to pitch in because it would be important for her son to see.
“But when you become a mom, there’s something that just happens where you feel like you could take on the world, you could do anything. And the Super Bowl is one of the biggest stages in the world. So as scary as that was because I haven’t been on stage in seven years, there’s something exhilarating about the challenge of it all. And it’s important for me to do this this year. It’s important for representation, it’s important for my son to see that.”
Rihanna will perform for 13 minutes in the coming 2023 Super Bowl Halftime show and she intends to leverage the time to not only perform but to celebrate her music catalog. “That was the hardest, hardest part—deciding how to maximize 13 minutes but also celebrate,” she revealed via Billboard. “That’s what this show’s gonna be. It’s gonna be a celebration of my catalog in the best way that we could have put it together. You’re trying to cram 17 years of work into 13 minutes…but I think we did a pretty good job of narrowing it down. There were probably about 39 version of the setlist right now. We’re on our 39th. Every little change counts, whether I want a guitar cut out, something muted, something added or just put in a whole new song, or take out a whole song.”
Although she did not hint at the songs that she will sing that day, Riri, however, made known that she just wants to have fun with music.
“I’m feeling open to exploring, discovering, creating, things that are new, things that are different, things that are off, weird, might not ever make sense to my fans, you know, the people that know the music that I put out,” she said. “I just want to play. I want to have fun. I want to have fun with music.”
