Olandria Carthen Channels Her Inner Barbie in a Striped Swimsuit

Olandria Carthen, known as the Bama Barbie, is embracing her iconic status by partnering with Mattel’s Barbie brand for a special activation at Coachella, called Ochella.

As the Love Island USA Season 7 runner-up and emerging fashion figure, she poses on a pink Barbie pool float, wearing a black and white striped swimsuit inspired by the original 1959 Barbie, paired with Chanel glasses and a high ponytail. This collaboration highlights Black Girl Magic, timeless beauty, and the importance of representation on a global stage.

Olandria Carthen has captivated audiences since her appearance on Love Island USA, combining confidence and Southern charm. She now brings this energy and a nod to Barbie’s vintage style to Coachella, reinforcing her reputation as a real-life Barbie.

Who Is Olandria Carthen? The Bama Barbie Phenomenon

Olandria Lashae Carthen, born May 29, 1998, in Decatur, Alabama, is a first-generation college graduate known for her resilience and style. Fans dubbed her “Bama Barbie” during Love Island USA Season 7 due to her distinctive features and resemblance to the iconic Mattel figure.

As a runner-up on Love Island USA, she gained a dedicated following through her grounded personality, Southern background, and strong work ethic. Since the show, her career has advanced significantly.

She was featured as a “Rookie” in the 2026 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, participated in high-fashion campaigns, attended events such as the Vanity Fair Oscar Party, and became a muse for leading stylists, including The Reismans.

Olandria credits her single mother, who raised three children on one income, as a major source of inspiration. She reflected: “I always admired her work ethic as we were growing up. Imagine three kids, a single parent, one paycheck … We never went without … Even with me with the college thing, having to figure out how I’m gonna get my education … I had to get creative. I started sending out letters, working for my old landlord, and cleaning out houses for extra cash to be able to pay towards my books and things like that. Seeing how my mom got creative when it came to stretching that dollar, it made me get creative when I found myself in those tough moments.”

That same creativity and determination now drive her partnership with Barbie for Coachella.

The Coachella announcement features Olandria on a pink pool float, wearing a vintage black and white striped swimsuit inspired by the original 1959 Barbie. She completes the look with oversized Chanel glasses and a ponytail, blending retro style with modern confidence.

This styling is a deliberate homage. The classic striped swimsuit has been central to Barbie’s image for decades, symbolising fun, fashion, and opportunity. By wearing it, Olandria Carthen connects nostalgia with contemporary Black excellence, demonstrating that Barbie’s world is now more inclusive.

Social media responded enthusiastically after she captioned her teaser video: “It’s about to be a Barbie takeover! See you in the desert #Ochella.” Fans began speculating about possible immersive experiences, such as a “Barbielandria Dream House” with photo opportunities, themed decor, and interactive elements celebrating self-expression and style.

Coachella brings together music, art, fashion, and influence. Featuring Olandria alongside Barbie highlights important discussions about beauty standards and representation. Barbie has evolved to embrace diversity in body types, skin tones, careers, and stories. Partnering with Olandria, who represents her Alabama heritage on a global stage, marks a significant next step.

Her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit feature established her as a leading model. This collaboration further highlights a Black woman from the South redefining the Barbie image in 2026. Many fans are calling for an official Olandria Carthen Barbie doll in Mattel’s series to recognise her cultural impact.

Beyond her public image, Olandria inspires through her relatability. She shares insights into her modelling journey and emphasises the importance of hard work and creativity, remaining connected to her roots.

The Ochella activation demonstrates how brands like Barbie engage with cultural moments. By selecting Olandria, Mattel leverages her significant social media following and the dedicated Love Island USA fanbase.

The striped swimsuit look appeals to nostalgia for vintage fashion while promoting a modern, body-positive message. Olandria’s style celebrates confidence and encourages women to embrace their individuality.

As Coachella approaches, Olandria is expected to deliver bold looks, empowering messages, and a strong visual presence. Whether attending in person or following online, her participation is anticipated to be a highlight of the season.
