Ciara is now officially a citizen of Benin. And what better way to mark the milestone than with a stunning beauty look that pays homage to the West African nation’s rich culture?
The singer and fashion icon chose to celebrate her new nationality not just with words, but with a bold, regal look that beautifully fuses heritage and modern Black expression.
In the series of photos she shared on Instagram, Ciara is seen wearing a full afro, styled to amplify the natural beauty of Black hair. Her hair is adorned with cowrie shells and beads; ornaments that carry deep meaning across many African cultures.
The arrangement of the cowries resembles the ceremonial headwear of queens and priestesses from the Benin Kingdom, emphasizing a divine and noble presence.
Ciara’s outfit further drives the message home. She wears a green sports jersey with “BENIN West Africa” boldly emblazoned across the chest. The green and yellow palette gives it an Afrocentric tone, while the pairing with high-waisted blue jeans gives it a modern, street-style twist.

In her caption, Ciara wrote simply: “Benin girl 🇧🇯🩰.” The phrase affirms her new identity, the flag signals national pride, and the dancer emoji evokes joy, rhythm, and cultural celebration.

On July 26, during the United Nations International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent, Ciara officially became a citizen of Benin. She was welcomed by President Patrice Talon and the people of Benin in a moving ceremony that recognized the cultural ties between the African continent and its global diaspora.
In her own words, she shared, “To be welcomed by His Excellency President Patrice Talon, the Office of Benin Tourism, and the beautiful people of Benin is a moment I will never forget. Thank you Benin for opening your arms and your heart to me. See you soon. Je suis béninoise.”
The citizenship scheme is part of an initiative by the West African country to build ties with the African diaspora and boost cultural tourism. Ciara officially became a citizen at a ceremony in the city of Cotonou.
“This act, which is symbolic, humane and historic, is not merely an administrative gesture. It is a gesture of the soul, a return to one’s roots, a hand extended to those whom history, in its brutality, had torn from this land,” the government said in a statement following the ceremony.
By enacting the My Afro Origins Law last year, Benin joined countries like Ghana and Guinea-Bissau in offering citizenship to people with an African ancestor who was taken from their homeland during the transatlantic slave trade. Descendants can now apply to become citizens via a newly launched website.
Just last week, Benin appointed American filmmaker Spike Lee and his wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, as its ambassadors for African-Americans in the US.
Benin’s coastline, once part of the Slave Coast, served as a major departure point for enslaved Africans sent to the Americas. Between 1580 and 1727, the Kingdom of Whydah on what is now Benin’s coast, exported an estimated one million Africans to the US, Caribbean, and Brazil.
It’s refreshing to see Africans and the diaspora reclaim their roots, rewriting the narrative with pride, power, and purpose. And Ciara is already doing a beautiful job of it. From embracing her heritage to wearing her identity like royalty. I mean, just look at that voluminous afro.
Congratulations, Queen.
