At the recent 2024 Met Gala, all eyes were on Cardi B as she arrived in a stunning black gown that left everyone in awe. However, when asked by Emma Chamberlain about the designer behind her show-stopping look, Cardi hesitated and simply referred to them as “Asian.”
This slip-up quickly went viral, with many criticizing the Grammy winner for not knowing the name of the man behind her iconic dress. However, Cardi took to social media to clarify the situation, explaining that she simply forgot how to pronounce Sensen Lii’s name, the founder and designer behind the label Windowsen.
In a video posted on Twitter, Cardi explained that she didn’t actually forget the designer’s name, but rather struggled to pronounce it correctly. The designer in question, Sensen Lii, is the founder of Windowsen and is known for his intricate designs.
Cardi revealed that she had a lot on her mind that night and was feeling overwhelmed as she made her way into the Met Gala. She admitted that she didn’t want to butcher Lii’s name by attempting to pronounce it incorrectly, so she simply referred to him as an “Asian designer.”

The rapper also clarified that she used the term “Asian” instead of specifying Lii’s nationality because she was unsure and didn’t want to be offensive. She emphasized that her intention was not to disrespect Lii or his work.
In response to Vogue’s former managing director’s criticism, Cardi reiterated that her slip-up was unintentional and was not meant to offend anyone. She explained that the pressure of the moment caused her mind to race, leading to the misstep in her response.
“I feel like the designer and my stylist worked really hard for this theme, so for you to be kind of shady because she feel offended or whatever, it just proves why you’re the former director,’ she fired. ‘You’re trying to offend me but you’re actually offending the people behind-the-scenes.”

As per Cheah who commented on one’s of the singer’s post, Cardi’s lack of knowledge to remember her designer is disappointing.
“For the record and recognition, and no thanks to Cardii B, the designer of her gown is Sensen Lii who’s Chinese. The gown took two months to make. I personally think it’s boring and not even on theme but she chose it and should have at least remembered his name and not just that he’s ‘Asian,” he wrote.
