During her childhood, Rihanna was one of those kids who usually let-loose in the house whenever her mother steps out for work in the morning. Of course, we’ve all been there — the liberty that no one is around to exercise some authority and the rare opportunity to do whatever you want in the house. This was exactly how Rihanna had herself acquainted with makeup as a child.
The singer and businesswoman revealed this in an interview with Harper Bazaar as she’s the cover star for the Magazine’s September Issue. In the stunning cover shot by Gray Sorrenti, the Barbadian beauty posed in a white Fenty shirt dress, complete with a pearl choker necklace, bold red lips, and braids hairstyle. In the accompanying interview, Riri talked about her music career, Fenty Beauty, and also shared a story about her mom who once worked at a beauty store.
According to the 32-year-old, the mother was well versed with makeup products at the time but she was never allowed to wear it which prompted her clandestine use of the products whenever the mom was out. “She knew everything about perfume, skincare, and makeup,” Rihanna told Bazaar. “She never let me wear makeup, but I was secretly fascinated. So when she’d leave home, I would play around with hers.”
Speaking about Fenty Skin, the beauty mogul revealed she had the plan of launching skincare from the very beginning of Fenty Beauty, adding that the development took more than two years to ensure the right quality. “I’ve always seen the Fenty brand as more than just makeup, and I knew I wanted to make skincare from the very beginning,” Rihanna says. “It was just about getting it right. You have to live with the formulas for awhile and test them in different ways. It’s very different from makeup in that sense. It takes a long time.”
